food

Aubergine-based baba ganoush was creamy and tasty, and ‘ash’ was the perfect starter for the current climate.

A very thick soup made with barley, rice, lemon and herbs, it’s great nourishment for freezing weather. For the mains we ordered ‘bademjan’, an aubergine stew with tomatoes and onions.

As with baba ganoush the aubergine had been blended finely into a paste, and it was served with saffron rice.

The minced lamb and chicken kebabs were faultless too, well cooked and tasting of saffron and lemon. We ordered a cinnamon tea which came with complementary baklava while we pondered the dessert menu.

We opted for ice cream, made with rose water, saffron and cinnamon, ‘faloodeh’ which is a sort of noodle sorbet with rose water, and almond cakes. The meal came to around £30 a head for four people, including two bottles of wine, impressive given the amount of food we’d consumed and the Bayswater post code.A fantastic meal and a wonderful introduction to Iranian cookery.

Hafez Persian restaurant in London

Review analysis
food   drinks

Named after a 14th century Iranian poet, the restaurant is set in a terrace with three outside tables and a ground floor dining room.

The head chef, Farshid Ziafa, worked in a restaurant in Tehran in his youth, but has been working here for many years.

Sea bass fillet (£13.90) was pan-fried, seasoned with saffron and spices, but the spicing was extremely subtle to the point where it was hard to detect (11/20).

Service was pleasant enough but was quite slow, and it was not easy to get either of the waitresses’ attention.

Overall Hafez is a decent enough neighbourhood restaurant, and certainly better than several Persian restaurants that I have tried over the years, but it is not somewhere to which to plan a special trip.

ambience   food

Nailed to the walls – and even parts of the ceiling – pretty spoons, Persian teapots, trays and other silverware serve as quirky decoration in this long-running neighbourhood restaurant.

Books are also artfully arranged as ornamental installations, perhaps a nod to the restaurant’s namesake: 14th-century Persian poet Hafez.

Hafez’s signature dish, the pomegranate-based fesenjan, is among just six chicken and lamb stews (four of which are also available in vegetarian versions) on a brief, but interesting menu.

Made the classic way with big pieces of chicken, the fesenjan also featured a thick sauce that was sweet and tart in equal measure.

The dish seemed particularly popular among the staff, who proudly raved about it, as well as the restaurant’s wafer-thin, sesame-topped bread made fresh to order.

By A. Posted on 20/05/2004 What Hafez lacks in space it more than makes up for with its great food, good service and lovely decor.

Possibly the best Persian food in London, but that's my opinion.
