Al Santo

Al Santo

"Eclectic décor, amiable service, and great mediterranean food to boot: Al Santo delivers the goods, no doubt.

Somehow managing to blend a fine selection of Italian and Greek delicacies into one lovely restaurant, Al Santo is the place to go to whenever the craving for some authentic taste from sunny lands hits home.

Speaking of home: you'll feel like part of the family, thanks to their friendly and smiling service and cosy atmosphere."

The Santo family comes from the north of Mexico, with most of the family from Sonoroa (except Carlos who comes from Baja California and is quite proud of that fact).

They’re a gastronomic family, with their first restaurant, the Mexicali Rose, located in Aguascalientes in Central Mexico.

Chef-Patron Fernando grew up in his family’s kitchens with his first job at 13.

Since then, his cooking life has landed him in kitchens around the world — Los Angeles , San Francisco, Sidney, Alicante, London and back home in Mexico.

At this time, Chef-Patron Fernando worked in various restaurants and ran the kitchen of Taqueria, a Mexican restaurant in Notting Hill.

food

Located over the road from Del'Aziz, Al Santo has more charm than its illustrious neighbour - and, dare we say it, offers simpler (but way better) fare for far less money and less chaos.

Essentially a café, Al Santo also offers a wonderful selection of fresh pasta dishes, fresh Greek and Italian salads and tasty paninis.

Snacks include savoury cheese and ham croissants (delicious) and traditional tramezzini sandwiches, while the bona fide Italian staff will always let you try some of the excellent cheeses on offer.

Oh, and for those looking for a spot of brunch on the weekend - there's an Italian take on the full English breakfast which is well worth exploring.

The welcome addition of Al Santo in SW6 is further proof that small, independently run establishments boast more character than anything a chain has to offer.

food   staff

From staff member Anna’s original soups, to Roberto’s panini (the recipe remains a secret), to Marco’s homemade tiramisu, stopping in at Al Santo is like stopping by a bustling family kitchen, except this kitchen is in fact a popular Fulham cafe and restaurant down Vanston Place.

Spend a sunny afternoon sipping quality Italian espresso on the terrace before tucking in to some delicious Greek kleftiko or moussaka.

This is one of the few London independents left, offering a range of home-style Mediterranean (chiefly Greek and Italian) dishes and genuinely warm service.

Al Santo has a wonderfully haphazard feel, offsetting the consistently good food on offer.

The venue is delightfully packed with curios, a look which seems to reflect the wandering, inquisitive nature of the staff who contribute their recipes to the menu – keep coming back to this Vanston Place eatery near Fulham Broadway and you’ll keep being surprised by the Greek and Italian cuisine on offer.
