The unusual name for this traditional pub comes from men who used to carry sedan chairs for the well-to-do people of London in the 18th century.
The sedan chair was originally brought to England in the 17th Century and was popular with wealthy people who did not want to walk through the dirty, smelly, muddy streets of London at that time.
The men carrying the sedan chairs would for their next fares in the pub, hence the name The Two Chairmen!
There are also chandeliers, wood panelling and comfortable leather furniture making it a truly authentic London pub experience in which to relax and enjoy our food and great range of drink and cask ales. The area around The Two Chairmen is full of attractive townhouses, quiet mews and small alleys giving the feel of a bygone age.
We have an extensive menu of food and drink, so whatever the preferences of your guests, we will be pleased to accommodate them at The Two Chairmen.
Two Chairmen - Wikipedia
[1] The pub sign can be traced back to 1729 and features two men carrying a sedan chair.
The pub has been called 'The hidden gem of Dartmouth Street' by The London Evening Standard.
[3] The pub is located on Dartmouth Street opposite the infamous early theatre The Royal Cockpit, which was known as a cockfighting arena.
[4] Rebuilt in 1756,[5] Two Chairmen is named after the two men who used to carry the sedan chairs for wealthy patrons who frequented the pub in its early days.
[6] Apparently the Sedan chair carriers would wait in the pub for fares which would appear after the cockfights had finished.
Simpson's Tavern: London's Oldest Chophouse - London Lamppost
ambience food value
Simpson’s Tavern is certainly not a new restaurant; it’s an old style Victorian chophouse.
For the mains there is a choice from four sections, the grill (as you’d expect in a chophouse) offering plates of pure meat, the there were lists of mains, the daily specials, and salads.
Sorely tempted by the baked ham with parsley sauce, my companion eventually settled on the roast duck with seasonal vegetables and apple sauce from the specials of the day, and we ordered a side of chips and another of cabbage and bacon.
It was well laced with bacon, which was great to see as so often one has to go mining through the cabbage in search of it and, while the Savoy cabbage was cooked perhaps further than you would likely find at a high end restaurant, it was cooked to the appropriate degree for what it accompanied and age the food harked back to.
Simpson’s Tavern is the perfect place for a good quality quick lunch if you are in the area and don’t want anything overly expensive or fancy, or if you just want to experience a Victorian style chophouse.
