Pubs that try to please everybody can sometimes be found lacking, but credit to the Vauxhall Griffin - they pull it off pretty successfully.
Tucked off a side street a few minutes walk from the unpleasantness of Vauxhall station, and once an underwhelming pub called 'Wyvil's', the new owners know what they're doing.
Nicely decorated in a slightly shabby bohemian style, a central bar separates the comfortable main bar from the back area where you can find board games-a-plenty and a pool table.
Previous visits have found this place busy with a pre-clubbing crowd and it's worth noting the main bar area fills up pretty quickly.
Nevertheless, at other less frenetic times the Griffin is arguably the best pub in Vauxhall.

The main focus of the work was to refurbish the interior, which included a new tile and timber floor.
New licensees Kevin Tuvey and Michael Kelly said that they want to ensure that the Punch site stays at the centre of the Vauxhall community following its refit and change of ownership.
“The Vauxhall Griffin is a pub we know well.
It has a great community feel and we are determined to ensure it stays at the heart of the neighbourhood,” Tuvey said.
Punch openings manager Joe Sadler said he hoped customers would appreciate the pub’s new look.

Ale fans have to make do with bottles from the fridge and a simple pub grub menu is offered at lunchtime, along with Tuesday nights (which compliments the lively pub quiz).
Vauxhall has plenty of pubs - some good, others less so - but the Griffin is arguably the best of the lot.

A bit like gay people who take pride in passing for straight, the Griffin is a ‘straight’ pub that’s very gay-friendly.
If the other Vauxhall venues are too in-your-face gay, then this comfortable pub is a refuge from all the high- NRG tunes and relentless cruising.
They do a nice burger, and the pub quiz on Tuesday nights (8pm) is a laugh.
