The place used to be a squat, and is now cooperatively run, if you live in London, or will spend some time passing through and fancy yourself a cook, you can even apply to spend a night cooking there for friends, or passing trade.
The place is unlicensed but there is no corkage charge, and so you can bring your own wine and eat very well with alcohol.
Eco Eatery Review: Bonnington Cafe | Londonist
food
Run by member cooks, with no single person in charge, it obviously aims to operate sustainably, while the decision to exclude fish and meat makes it a good choice for the eco conscious eater.
Dinner at the Bonnington Cafe isn't simply a matter of turning up.
We ended up arriving a little early, still over keen, which was, Margarete assured us in a rather stern voice, better than being late.
We chose chickpea tagine with two salads, followed by coffee and cake.
The coffee and cake that followed was alright, nothing special.

Blood's up at the vegan cafe | Life and style | The Guardian

Last weekend the Escape section of the Observer published a piece by me about the Bonnington Cafe in London's Vauxhall, and in particular, its vegan night.
Flying Fish said that places like the Bonnington cafe were not for 'Observer restaurant critics'.
As I say in the original piece I think vegetarian food has to be good because it is meat free not in spite of the fact.
As proof that I am not simply biased against non-meat cookery per se I direct you to this review of three Indian restaurants, published last year, the third of which is a vegetarian place in Leicester which I liked very much.
What I have absolutely no time for is the suggestion that, because the restaurant is run by vegetarians or vegans (the para-military wing of the vegetarian movement, as Anthony Bourdain once memorably described them), it deserves to be left in peace.

Eventually it resulted in the situation today where a rota of cooks each take a different night, paying a rental to cover upkeep of the cafe and holding on to whatever cash they make.
It's also difficult to run both a meat and a vegetarian cafe in the same place.'
I love the vegetarian - often vegan - culinary traditions of southern India, for example, or the non-meat dishes of Italy.
There are other cooks doing other things on different nights and I'm sure any of them would be happy to make sure there is a table 'lovingly reserved' for you.
Whether there will ever be another table lovingly reserved for me at the Bonnington Cafe is a different matter entirely.

This cooperatively run vegetarian and vegan restaurant was initially set up back in the '80s to serve the local community – many of whom were squatting nearby.
Today it retains the community feel, with a collective of cooks keeping the pans hot.
The clientele tends to comprise locals and regulars, too.
Expect, then, dishes influenced by Japan, Italy, France, America and Portugal, all with a vegetarian or vegan bent.

Get Directions The Bonnington Café is a co-operatively run vegetarian and vegan restaurant in the Bonnington Square Community Centre in the heart of Vauxhall.
Each person that cooks has the responsibility to pay rent to the community centre and also to put something in the café kitty to replace things like plates and pots.
The cook is responsible for buying the food, preparing and serving it, and cleaning up at the end of the day.A community-friendly place We have monthly meetings where we talk about the maintenance of the café, how we might want to develop in the future and any other issues, like complaints or requests to put on exhibitions, fundraisers, events and now as a “food hub” with more focus social enterprise.
Cuisine from around the world The philosophy behind the café is to have a community-friendly place where people can come in, sit down and meet people.
It is also a place for people who like to cook vegetarian food to be able to do it without the risk and investment involved in opening a café of their own.
