The Good Earth Restaurant, Wandsworth - The Bon Vivant Journal

food   location

Situated next to the picturesque expanse of Wandsworth Common, Bellevue Road is already well known to those of a foodie inclination, having been home to Michelin-starred French restaurant Chez Bruce for the best part of 20 years.

However, it would seem that Bruce Poole’s celebrated brasserie is not the only gastro-string to the area’s bow, with newcomer The Good Earth serving up excellent Chinese food just two minutes up the road.

A family-run establishment, it is the latest opening in a group of London-based eateries under the Good Earth banner, with another restaurant in Knightsbridge and a number of take-away outlets dotted around South West London.

Having been seated in a sleek, modern dining room, all polished wood and crisp white tablecloths, we opted for two set dinners, assured by the helpful Maître D’ that the fixed price menu was made up of the restaurant’s finest dishes.

Done well, it’s a thing of beauty, and happily, The Good Earth does it very well indeed, the duck beautifully tender, its skin crisp and tacky.

The Good Earth, Wandsworth

Review analysis
food

Lovers of authentic yet thoroughly modern Chinese food in South West London have cause to be excited.

The Good Earth, who have set the standard in Chinese cuisine in London for over 30 years, now has a restaurant on Bellevue Road in the heart of Wandsworth Common.

The Good Earth is and always has been a genuine family business.

Back in 1979, Holland Kwok launched their first site on the Kings Road, following this success with openings in Esher, Mill Hill and the Brompton Road.

Now run by Holland’s son Andy Kwok, the ethos remains the same in all the branches – superb quality food cooked by Innovative and authentic Chinese food prepared by local chefs and served in a chic, relaxed setting – The Good Earth is certainly a welcome addition to this thriving, popular corner of Wandsworth Common.

The interior now has been transformed into something that sits comfortably in between a traditional Chinese restaurant and a Bistro.

There’s an old piece of Chinese Calligraphy on the wall that apparently was on the wall of the very first Good Earth restaurant on the Kings Road.

Tangerine Kaarange Chicken was, so Andy told us, The Good Earth’s answer to sweet and sour chicken.

A delectable and sticky dish of tender sweet chicken marinated in ginger and soy that tasted every bit as good as it looked.

We did manage some green vegetables in the form of dry fried french beans with dry shrimps.

The Good Earth is a Bellevue Road stalwart: the area’s go-to ‘smart’ Chinese.

There was a trio of deep-fried, vermicelli-wrapped prawns which, while on the greasy side, came with a nicely piquant sauce.

Just don’t bother with the too-soggy dry-fried beans or the meek, distinctly pedestrian kung po prawns.

The best dish?

The Good Earth may not be the destination it once was, but if your craving is for high-street, rather than high-end, it’ll fit the bill nicely.
