Finally an onion bhaji on offer and not just that, there are two other bhaji varieties available!

The mains on offer have a familiar air with many a South Indian establishm ent under our belts we're now experience ent.

The curry is good, pretty tasty but everything is a similar shade of deep red.

g 9pm I'm not feeling good about the number of CURRYBONDe the Bond leg...We get the bill after a bit of a struggle attracting Mr. Smiley which comes in at £116.55 that's £16.65/ g beers were on offer.

Kolam therefore suffers from a similar plight to many a Tooting curry establishm ent, it's good but you could walk 5 minutes spend £10 less and probably be happier with your evening.

However long before the foody accolade has been knocking around Tooting has first and foremost been famed for its curry’s, and rightly so.

There’s a plethora of good Indian restaurants, many being bring your own, in fact Tooting could be home to the best curry in London, but that’s a whole different challenge!

The venue of the evening was chosen by a friend, conveniently it’s almost on her door step, but I’d been assured this place served tasty fresh curries – its resting on your shoulders missy!!

This turned out to be a good move, these fresh curries don’t cook themselves you know!

There’s a lot of choice in Tooting so if your working your way around the curry houses add this one to your list.

On the way, we noticed Kolam and its promotion of £15 for two for two starters, two currys, two bread or rice, and a bottle of wine.

As main courses, we had to choose between currys and we decided on the spicy chicken vindaloo curry and a chilli chicken curry.

Cost and conclusion: two starters, two main courses and a bottle of wine for £15.

Just too bad the currys were so incredibly salty because the surrounding was pleasant, the waitress very nice… Without that problem (which completely ruined the meal), it would be a good value for money and we can only think and hope it was a one time mistake.

In the area, you have Al Mirage if you are into curry (2 minutes walk toward Tooting Broadway) and the Kings Head if you are looking for a pub (same way as for Al Mirage but it is closer).

This mask from Sri Lanka may have been used in Kolam performances.

Kolam, a masquerade dance, is a form of drama more akin to opera, where a central theme is developed as series of episodes acted by dancers in elaborate masks, climaxing in the exposition of a story.

These stories were based on real characters, but with exaggerated features, and used masks extensively.

The ritual performances were staged to appease the gods and demons, so that they would confer their blessings or heal the afflicted.

I've eaten at a lot of Indian Restaurants over the years, and I really love the cuisine.

Kolam restaurant (60 Upper Tooting Rd SW17 0208 672 8553) is one of the best Indian restaurants I've eaten at in London, and is my favourite Indian restaurant in Tooting Bec/Balham (not least because it's the only licensed one!)

Don't let the decor deceive you, the south Indian style Bhajis are so different and tasty as is the entire menu.

The service is excellent, very much a family business having been there for thirty years, and the food is exceptionally reasonable priced.

A real gem of a restaurant that gets somewhat swamped by an abundance of competition nearby.
