Lord Palmerston: Popular Tufnell Park pub WILL reopen in ...

The owners of the Lord Palmerston have reassured customers the pub will open next month after refurbishment.

Young’s Brewery said it would begin refurbishing the pub, which has sat empty for three weeks, on October 16.

Customers raised concerns last week after a scribbled sign appeared in the pub window saying: “Pub now closed until further notice.”

A spokeswoman for the brewery said the pub in Dartmouth Park Hill, Tufnell Park, will reopen managed by Young’s pub company rather than by tenants as in the past.

She added: “We look forward to welcoming locals once again, ensuring the Lord Palmerston is a pub for the whole community to enjoy.”

The Lord Palmerston is a rarity: a gastropub that doesn?t think it?s a restaurant.

Inside the Palmerston remains very much a local pub.

It?s a pub you can easily go in to for a quiet pint after work.

What the Palmerston manages to do so successfully is balance the homely pub image with really great food.

With an atmosphere that is as laid-back and unpretentious as the menu, it?s a great place to have a good meal, a quiet drink or both.

A part of the pub life of Dartmouth Park for many years, this hidden gem has a welcome all of its own and a wealth of space indoors and out in which to enjoy its fine array of beers, wines and tasty food.

On the corner of Dartmouth Park Hill and Chetwynd Road you will discover a large Victorian building that houses a hidden gem of a gastro pub, The Lord Palmerston.

First impressions banish any misgivings: this is still a very likeable pub, busy but well marshalled by smiley, sharp-witted staff.

There’s a good range of ales (an excellently hoppy Redemption Big Chief the pick), a solid wine list and decor that combines modern retro whimsy (top-hat Victorians and fighter planes, deer skull, Union Jack) with traditional pub comfort (chandeliers, fireplaces).

From the blackboard menu, ‘smoked potato terrine, poached duck egg’ was a real hit: a peppery millefeuille of potato with perfectly runny egg and watercress – direct, handsomely presented and full of flavour.

After that, though, things went astray: fridge-cold beetroot with goat’s curd and watercress was complicated by an over-sweet walnut praline; warm pigeon breast salad suffered from too few of the ‘bitter leaves’ and flavourless crackling.

Still, the events show a pub focused on returning to the heart of its community – and when the sun shines, the beer garden will help too.
