Last night Brixton Buzz went along to the launch of the new Mere Scribbler pub opposite Streatham Common and enjoyed some south London hospitality and a few beers.

As we reported last month, the venue is located on the former site of the Bank pub, and is looking to tempt in locals with a full menu of hot food and snacks, draught beers, wines and and cocktails.

The Mere Scribbler is the latest local boozer from the growing Livelyhood chain, who currently run three other south London watering holes – the Clapham North, The Regent in Balham and The Old Frizzle of Wimbledon.

Our first thoughts were – to paraphrase Radiohead – that everything was in its right place for a modern revamped pub.

There was bare brick walls, exposed wooden floors, trendy lights, comfy sofas and all the usual elements you’d expect from a new pub in 2017, along with a food menu aimed at a more upmarket clientele (i.e. not cheap).

So you've never been to…#1. The Mere Scribbler | Below The River

This is the fourth takeover by a company whose head honcho is Sarah Wall, a longstanding Streatham local.

A three-cheese gnocchi with cavolo nero and swede, bangers with a root vegetable mash and a selection of burgers, and your standard beef and chicken options; while the vegetarian offering contains smoked ricotta, toasted sage and caramelised onions.

To complement their strong focus on local produce, as evident in their beer offerings, Livelyhood is running their very own SW London Gin Tour.

This is box title The Mere Scribbler is located at 246 Streatham High Road, right next to Streatham Common, and is open daily.

We were ordering rounds with the staff at the table.

3 times drinks ordered at the table did not show up so we got up and ordered at the bar.

When the time came to pay I was informed that we had paid the table next to us and not our table and there was an additional bill for the balance!!

The bill was larger than expected but with many of the party already left we simply could not work out if the drinks that never arrived were charged for.

It was all very disorganised and my colleagues asked me not to pay the bill a third time but I did.
