THE PLACE Three Little Birds is a new restaurant in Hove focusing on rustic mixed European food with a modern twist.

THE MEAL The place opened at the end of last year, but we attended a launch party where the public were invited for a taster evening to sample the menu.

THE VERDICT In a city seemingly saturated with new places selling burgers, it’s great to see a new family run restaurant doing something different and quite unique.

It feels like a place you can pop into from the cold for a light bite and a drink – or somewhere you might book a table with a group of friends to enjoy wholesome rustic meals and fresh seafood.

There is a large variety of options on offer, which can sometimes means a restaurant is trying to do too much, but here all the food was cooked very well and full of flavour.

A new Jamaican-inspired cafe/bar has opened up on Brixton’s Coldharbour Lane, and we popped down to grab a coffee and take a few photos last night.

Three Little Birds – named after the 1977 Bob Marley classic – describes itself as a ‘café and boutique by day, and kitchen and rum bar by night.’

The bar is the brainchild of ‘foodie entrepreneur’ and former Miss Jamaica Universe, April Jackson, a graduate of Columbia University and creator of ‘The Yummy Truth’ food blog.

There’s a small range of ‘Jamrock’ clothing and Jamaican jewellery, coffee and condiments on offer.

Three Little Birds can be found at 412 Coldharbour Lane, Brixton, London SW9 8LF.

Last time I didn’t like a restaurant, someone got so cross they threatened to report me to the Independent Press Standards Organisation for the sheer gall of having an opinion, which, in this case, happened to be that their restaurant was rubbish.

El Pye was desperate to avoid Shuang Shuang, describing it as “the kind of place you would have taken a date when you were a student,” making sure she emphasised the “you”s. I said it would be fun, and that’s how we found ourselves staring forlornly at scallops that cost £4 each as they trundled past like sad ducks on a shooting range at the Fairground of Mild Disappointment.

That’s the way things are at Three Little Birds, though: the food isn’t as fiery or in your face as, say, Rudie’s, the recently-opened Jamaican restaurant in Dalston (nor, if I were being honest, is it quite as good).

But the food isn’t the big selling-point here, it’s the atmosphere and the rum cocktails and the great service and the weird little shop selling Bob Marley merch.

There aren’t many places I’d rather spend an afternoon: if only all restaurants were this nice I wouldn’t get half as much hate mail.

Thank you C/K/A Three little birds has a really nice vibe and the food is delicious.

It's a nice little rum bar/ restaurant but too many tables cramped in.

The food was very overpriced - a case in point jerk chicken wings for £8 with no sides, and no children's portions.

the food was fantastic and the service was timely we both had the Jerk Burger - it was delicious, truly.

So good, Little food heaven!

Lord Sugar might have thought twice about chucking April Jackson off the last series of ‘The Apprentice’, had he known the Jamaican beauty queen would bounce back with an impressive Caribbean cafe like Three Little Birds.

Starters like the salt fish fritters were terrific: piping hot, wonderfully salty and chunky and with an ample serving of sweet chilli sauce.

The puds are more straightforward, but still delicious: let’s face it, a moist, sweet and crumbly rum cake is just how you want to end a meal.

Three Little Birds is a cool local spot that spares you the worry of paying too much for food or service that doesn’t hit the mark.

Every little thing is gonna be all right, at the very least, and often even better than that.
