Mama Lan serves authentic, handmade dumplings, noodle soups and street snacks made from family recipes from the heart of Beijing, China.

The new restaurant in Shoreditch stays true to the original Mamalan vibe in terms of intimacy, with 24 covers in a setting that exudes a Beijing street food market feel with its lighting feature made from 28 authentic Chinese birdcages.

Ning Ma, owner of Mama Lan, explains how it all started… “Just after the cultural revolution in China, my granddad and my mum used to run a dumpling and snack stall in the bustling street markets of Beijing.

The next dish to arrive was the moreish Spicy Chicken Wings – succulent yet crispy with a definite kick of chilli… things were starting to warm up inside Mamalan Clapham even as the temperature dropped outside.

Next was something less spicy but equally satisfying… traditional Beijing toasted buns, which are again a popular dish at Mamalan judging from the number of our fellow diners who had also ordered variations of these buns available with fillings of juicy shredded pork, crispy chicken, succulent prawns or tasty tofu.

From Beijing via Brixton comes Mamalan, a five-strong family of Chinese street food restaurants whose latest offspring has just arrived in Shoreditch.

Family is central to the Mamalan story: its roots lie in a market stall run by founder Ning Ma's grandfather, back in the old country.

Even the name is a tribute to Mama Lan, Ma's mother, who passed on the recipes he used to cook.

Building on the success of Ning Ma's restaurants in Brixton, Clapham, Dalston and Stratford, the Shoreditch branch offers a few variations on the winning theme.

Chicken noodle salad, served cold, is fresh and filling.

It’s named in honour of the head chef’s own mother (Mama Lan), who taught her to cook her own grandfather’s Beijing street food recipes.

Which, alongside the 28 birdcages brought all the way over from China itself, will have you feeling just like you’re chowing down in the middle of a Beijing street food market.

Exclusive to Shoreditch is an expanded drinks menu which, on top of beer and a selection of red and white wines, includes cocktails such as the Bull In A China Shop (Buffalo Trace, rose syrup, lemon juice and homemade jasmine iced tea), and the Beijing Blues (Broker’s, sake, Blue Curacao, lavender bitters, ginger cordial and 7up).

The food on the other hand is holding tight with a variety of Beijing skewers (try the chilli cumin lamb, or the honey glazed chicken), plus dumplings, noodles, and pork/ prawn/ tofu/ crispy chicken buns all available to order.

Where Bethnal Green Road meets Shoreditch High Street Overground has become a new food hub lately.

Her grandparents ran a food stall in Beijing after the Cultural Revolution, and Ma's restaurant recreates the street food classics of her childhood.

Four locations are already serving up the same food in Dalston, Clapham, Brixton and East Village, so Shoreditch is hardly a surprise.

Ning Ma tells us they'd worried the space wouldn't be big enough, but having stripped off the shelves around the fringes (the location used to be a fussy delicatessen) they were pleasantly surprised.

The location and bustling intimacy of the room mean it's best for Londoners on-the-run, who'll choose the practical option: big, winter-friendly noodle soup bowls, which are pleasing pre-cursors for the alcohol-soaked bars nearby.

Mama Lan began life as The Mama Lan Supper Club, where owner Ning Ma served up authentic Beijing cuisine in her own home.

Moments from Shoreditch High Street station, Mama Lan is well located, if a little difficult to find at first.

I go for the Beijing Blues, Mama Lan’s take on a spritz, with gin, sake, blue curacao, lavender bitters, ginger and fresh lemon.

While these will make a great substitute for any vegetarian diners, the pulled pork was a hard act to follow, so if there’s only room for one pair of buns, make sure it’s the former.

Mama Lan offers generous portions of authentic Beijing cuisine to enjoy in a casual yet stylish setting.

Mama knows best, with generous portions of decent dumplings for around a fiver.

A family affair inspired by the Beijing stall run by owner Ning Ma’s grandparents, it serves hearty northern-Chinese street-food – in particular, dumplings.

Brown-bottomed beef and pork pot-stickers fly out of the kitchen and into the crowded, ramshackle dining room at an impressive rate, but veggie dumplings filled with woodear mushroom, spinach and vermicelli are also worth a try (at a fiver for five, it would be rude not to).
