KOI Ramen Bar Review - Brick lane Market - Le Captain Foodie

Review analysis

In quest of the tastiest Ramen of London; I went this weekend to Brick Lane street food market and tried the Tonkotsu Ramen at KOI Ramen Bar.

With a very competitive price starting at £6 a Ramen; KOI Ramen wants to dissociate their Ramen from the other, more expensive, Ramen Restaurants you would find in London.

KOI Ramen bar has currently three locations: the original one is still in Brixton station Road; Another one at Tooting Market, and a pop-up food stall every Sunday at Brick Lane market.

As you can see in the picture above, the menu at KOI Ramen is pretty simple, they offer 3 different types of Ramen at an unbeatable price of £6.50 : Tonkotsu Pork, Miso Tofu and Miso Pork You then have the possibility to order the usual Extras with your ramen : Nitamago (marinated egg), extra Chashu, tofu or noodles.

KOI Ramen’s Tonkotsu is the cheapest Ramen of London at the moment.

This time, I ordered Shoyu Tonkotsu Ramen, which I thought was a bit fishy last time.

I had Katamen (hard) first, and 2nd time around Bari-Kata (extra hard) for the Kaedama (extra noodles).

Chyasu (pork) – a bit too fatty and heavy for me, especially when the soup is already quite heavy.

I don’t want to be pleased by toppings too much, I am a purist, soup and noodles.

But then again I know people in London love these things like fatty pork and pork buns,… (go to china town for pork buns man…) Overall 4/5 Much much better than the Shio I ordered last time!

We are a Japanese Ramen Noodle Bar, specialising in Tonkotsu Ramen – a rich and creamy pork soup noodle from the Southern regions of Japan.

Every single drop of soup is homemade and handmade, taking over 12 hours using traditional cooking techniques to create a pure, smooth, delicious pork broth… filled with fresh egg noodles and topped with 10 hour slow cooked tender pork belly slices marinated in our own special soya sauce blend we use only 100% high quality Japanese ingredients to create a completely authentic Tonkotsu soup.

Also try our super popular Miso Ramen, a tasty vegetarian soybean soup noodle (with pork belly slices if you like!)

Timeout’s Cheap Eats of the Week, Evening Standard Top 3 Ramen and Foodism Top 3 Ramen, we aim to serve the best ramen, at the best prices, with the biggest smiles!

Koi Ramen Bar | Restaurants in Brixton, London

Note: In June 2015, Koi Ramen moved location to become a permanent part of Pop Brixton.

The owners of this street stall in Brixton are convinced the UK is about to fall head over heels for the Japanese version of noodles in soup, so they named their stall ‘in love’.

But that’s enough carping on about names, let's talk noodles.

There are just two options on the menu – classic tonkotsu (12-hour-simmered pork bone broth) ramen, served with tender, char-grilled pork belly slices, bouncy noodles and crunchy kikurage (cloud ear) mushrooms.

The milky white tonkotsu broth was a perfect balance of creamy and savoury flavours with a hint of sweetness – just as you’d find in Japan.
