Brixton’s Coldharbour Lane continues its transformation into a trendy foodie destination with the news that chicken shop and bar, Fancy Funkin Chicken will be opening in September in the former premises of the much-missed Phoenix Cafe.
Wings and boneless bites feature alongside a hearty selection of fried or flame grilled chicken breast or thigh burgers such as the Totally Tropical Burger, served with char’d pineapple and smoked chilli mayo and the momentous Big and Greedy Burger, slathered in double cheese, crispy bacon, caramelised onion, lettuce and mayo.
And with the chicken and burgers comes the inevitable craft beers and ‘carefully curated cocktail list’ which will, no doubt, be priced at the standard nu-Brixton prices.
Wrapping up what’s in store is the equally inevitable DJs, with the Fancy Funkin Chicken playing host to DJs performing an “eclectic and upbeat music programme of Jazz and Fun” from Thursday through to Sunday.

Opening on Coldharbour Lane, Fancy Funkin Chicken (yes, it really is called that) will serve a range of southern American fried chicken dishes along with a dedicated cocktail menu and will host a range of DJs every weekend.
The birds at Fancy Funkin Chicken will be made to a traditional southern American recipe,crusted with herbs and spices before being fried.
Highlight dishes from the menu include: The cocktail and drinks list at Fancy Funkin Chicken will make use of fruit and other ingredients sourced locally from adjacent Brixton Market and will draw upon the founder’s background in the London bar and club scene.

‘Chicken shop concept’.
Luckily, the remit at Fancy Funkin Chicken seemingly extends only to poultry, waffles and cocktails.
Which is less a ‘concept’, more a half-arsed wave at a receding bandwagon.
The tropical burger was better: a decent portion of greaseless, crumb-coated fried chicken offset by a hunk of charred pineapple and a slick of smoked chilli mayo.
Come for the food – just leave the funkin’ concepts out of it.
