With most of central Brixton’s new bars being of the cocktails and ‘small plates’ variety, it’s good to be reminded that some original and interesting places still exist.

Case in point is Cafe Cairo, a truly alternative venue which manages to combine the friendly and down to earth atmosphere of a Middle Eastern  lounge with the DIY ethic from a brilliant 1990s Brixton squat (and in our view, that is very much a winning combination).

The eccentric exterior sets the tone, and once you’ve brushed past the thick curtains guarding the door, you’ll be in the small front bar area, which looks a bit like the kind of place you might find if Bladerunner had been set in Cairo.

There’s a small club area downstairs (accessible via rather rickety sets of stairs) with an intimate DJ booth, intriguing nooks and crannies, a real fire, and lots of low seating and cushions to sprawl over.

Unpretentious, fun and with a loyal local crowd, this is a great little bar that provides a much needed alternative to the depressingly predictable slew of trendy cocktail bars currently following the money into Brixton.
