With a claim to be one of the best pubs in Holborn and home of the best burger in London, we were delighted to be invited along to try The Old Crown’s new menu.

Set between Tottenham Court Road and Holborn stations, the pub was recently taken over by Topman for London Collections Men and we’d seen some good reviews – we were eager to try a burger for ourselves.

The menu was intriguing and after a little deliberation we ordered ‘The Route 66’ and ‘The Black Sticks’ burgers with a large side of onion rings to share.

‘The Route 66’ is made up of an organic beef patty, American cheese, bacon, a very large onion ring and bbq sauce, whilst ‘The Black Sticks’ burger is topped with Black Sticks blue cheese and bacon.

The dessert board was tempting but after our towering burgers and onion rings we were stuffed.

Similarly, The Old Crown Public House (anagram - ‘New Pubic Drool School’ – well, almost!)

There is no signage (not helped either by the lesser ‘Crown’ pub oop ‘tut rurd).

Cleanse yourself in the ethos of anti-branding; gasp and gape in awe at the sparkling recycled chandeliers; wriggle with glee on stools fashioned from old railway sleepers; sing high praises for the church-nicked organ pipes and sceptre behind the bar; bring toasted-joy to your nether regions by the old fireplace in the lounge bar; natter yourself unconscious in the purpose-built ladies’ DOUBLE-cubicle or just urinate solo, contentedly learning Spanish from the ever-so-clever audio lessons piped through the sound system; ogle wide-eyed at the hi-tech function rooms fitted with wifi, decks and screening facilities; marvel at the wonderous leather-bound, weekly-, daily-, hourly-updated, ever-evolving menu books; erupt with jubilation, all over the table, after tasting the totally-organic, locally-bought, 3-quid calamari smalls, standard mini-quiche/meatball appetisers, and Argentinean rib-eye steak that’s big enough to retaliate; ooh and aah at the deliciously-meaty wine list; clap your hands verily with rapture and delight at the sigh-inducing vodka options; Big-Big-BIG-Up the £10 vodka-champagne-raspberry ‘Bling Bling’ cocktails; experience the aural nirvana with your guides ‘funk’, ‘groove’ and ‘chill’; question your lense prescription when you think you see Natasha Richardson from Nip/Tuck sipping G n’ Ts with dance-legend Mylo; giggle and guffaw with the post-11pm clubbers doing their pre-The End rounds; chat till your heart’s content with funky design/media types loitering during the weekdays; or maybe, just maybe, wait until 6am and snaffle up a champagne breakfast alongside late-shift Clubland employees.

Like a young Wayne Rooney or James Dean, The Old Crown Public House has bags of fresh promise (with a bootful of ‘young talent’ too) and will definitely deliver some absolutely classic performances.

Unlike Wayne Rooney or James Dean, it won’t be prone to on-the-field temper tantrums or high-speed car crashes.

This New Oxford Street pub looks every bit the contemporary take on a traditional British boozer - think large leather chesterfields and exposed brickwork alongside gilded rococo mirrors, intricate chandeliers and wallpaper with a hint of the hunt about it.

The food menu is a mix of pub classics, sharing boards and daily specials.

A short wine list takes in France, Italy, Spain and a few new world regions, with most of the bottles available by the glass.

Classic cocktails sit alongside Old Crown specials, including 'twisted' gin and tonics.
