Talli Joe is a recently opened restaurant on Shaftesbury Avenue serving up what they are calling authentic Indian ‘half plates and full drinks’.

The answer is Talli Joe, a recently opened restaurant on Shaftesbury Avenue serving up what they are calling ‘half plates and full drinks’.

It was also at this point that I started to lose track slightly of which dish was which and flavours started to become a bit of a blur… Next up was this bowl of seafood curry with delicious big fat prawns, squid and seabream in a tasty coconut sauce.

One thing that I wish we had done was order less meaty main courses and more vegetable dishes, or even a side of rice, as in the end despite eating such a vast array of dishes I did leave the restaurant a little bit hungry.

It felt a little bit like they were serving you small plates but at full prices.

The menu skips around Indian cooking styles, from Punjabi through to Goan and beyond, plucking interesting dishes from around the country.

Kale chaat was a variant of a spinach chaat street food dish – the chef reckons that kale works better.

The version here was spot on, the level of sourness just right, the flavour of the meat and spices a hearty, complex affair – terrific cooking (15/20).

This was another enjoyable dish, the potato retaining its texture and the pumpkin an interesting and seasonal touch (13/20).

If you shared a modest bottle of wine then your cost per head would still only come to around £38, which seems very fair to me given the amount of work going into the dishes.

This continued for a few minutes until the manager appeared (Indian?

As it was cold we had wanted a table at the back but was told by the manager these were for a table of 3 or more.

The table at the side was dirty on the floor and we had to ask someone to clean it up.

As the evening progressed we noticed couples being given tables at the back.I ordered a Bohri curry which was a joke for £10 two chicken thighs and a roti on a side plate.

All staff here need to be re-trained and the manager sent back to school.

Britain consumes more chocolate than any other country Most people love chocolate but it turns out no one does more than the Brits – with the average Brit found to have consumed 8.4 kg of chocolate in 2017, according to new data.

Chocolate consumption around the world is on the rise, according to Mintel Global New Products Database (GNPD), which found that in the past year alone, Easter chocolate production has risen by 23 per cent 'Easter eggs should be banned for children under four' Dr Becky Spelman, chief psychologist at Harley Street’s Private Therapy Clinic, is calling for Easter eggs to be banned for consumption for children under the age of four, claiming that giving them the opportunity to binge on chocolate so young will give them an unhealthy relationship with food later on.

"Once a child starts overeating behaviour at a young age it’s very hard to turn things around for them in terms of food and their eating habits moving forward, leading to obesity from at very young age," she added According to Tesco, pineapple has overtaken avocado as the UK’s fastest-selling fruit, with sales increasing by 15 per cent in 2017.

The one at Talli Joe, splashed across signage, website and menus,  is to offer ‘Indian half plates + full drinks’ (don’t you just mean ‘small plates’ and, er, ‘drinks’?)

This new regional Indian ‘small plates and cocktails’ joint (because that’s what Talli Joe actually is) gets two crucial things right: the food and service.

Also excellent was a crab ‘scotch egg’, the warmly spiced crustacean’s meat wrapped around a soft, almost-runny quail’s egg, its yolk the colour of marigolds.

But in spite of its special ‘cocktail pairing’ menu and bright, contemporary decor (comparisons with Dishoom are inevitable: the setting here is less glamorous but the food is better), this is not a bar.

All Talli Joe needs now is a decent set menu (currently it’s à la carte only: excellent value at dinner but too dear for lunch) and it might just win me over completely.
