The Punjab – Famous North Indian Restaurant in Covent Garden

Today, the Punjab is the oldest North Indian restaurant in the UK, serving generations of diners in the heart of London’s theatre land.

The restaurant boasts customers from all over the world and from all walks of life, including the local residents of Covent Garden, visitors & tourists, students as well as a host of doctors, lawyers and politicians.

But back in 1946 when Sital’s grandfather was just starting out in the City of London, things were very different.

Raunka Punjab Diyan

We created the desired authentic look, every aspect of the restaurant décor contributes to the look of rural punjabi village.

The whole atmosphere has been given a traditional look with modern touch here in heart of london... (SOUTHALL) This wonderful atmosphere offers its customers a space for Private Parties.

What greets you here, instead is staff in traditional dresses and you already know the menu of the day (think mouth watering #parathas, #makki-di-roti with #saro daa saag and a glassful of #frothy lassi, #dollops of butter and lush green chillies, pakodas or chatpata kukkad ).

People who appreciate good taste and the essence of punjabi hospitality, Raunka punjab diyan will always remain in their hearts.

For those who are set to experience the true definition of the #punjabi Authentic taste, find pleasure with sheer #indian authenticated rural things, come in & feel a step closer to your #Roots.

Punjab is the oldest North Indian restaurant in the UK, serving a distinctive and traditional Punjabi cuisine to generations within the heart of London’s theatre scene.

Opening in 1947, this fourth generation family run business features an eclectic Punjabi atmosphere with historial pictures on their silk covered walls.

The lively and informal environment has gained their Punjabi cuisine worldwide acclaim.

This award-winning menu combines traditional tandoori dishes with their Punjabi specialities, to suit all tastes.

ES Food Newsletter This review was first published in February 2001 Punjab is a restaurant that has survived by evolving steadily.

The old-faithful dishes are here - you can have lamb Madras or chicken tikka masala, even tandoori chicken survives on the menu - in 1962 this was one of the first London restaurants to install a tandoor.

Since the 1970s, the big hits have been - in chronological order - chicken tikka masala; jalfrezi; acharri gosht (lamb with north Indian pickling spices); pudina gosht (lamb with mint); anari murgh (chicken with a sharp/ sweet pomegranate sauce); and garlic chicken.

For main course dishes try building a historical spectrum - the acharri gosht is a brown, savoury, spicy and rich lamb curry; the anari murgh is lighter and a good deal sharper and fruitier.

London Restaurant Review - Punjab in Covent Garden

Though it soon moved to Covent Garden (convenient for sightseeing, theater going and West End shopping), the owners have stayed true to their roots, building a loyal following with good, unpretentious and authentic food.

Serendipity on a Rainy AfternoonI wandered into Punjab and tried its scrumptiously old fashioned North Indian food almost by accident.

The array of chicken, lamb, fish, prawn and vegetarian dishes includes a Tandoori selection for those who like their Indian food explosive.

I chose Butter Chicken, a classic Punjabi dish of chicken, marinated in spiced yogurt and then simmered on the bone in a sauce of tomatoes, butter and cream, seasoned with cumin and coriander seeds, cayenne pepper and crushed cardamom.
