French Restaurant London - Bleeding Heart : Bleeding Heart

Review analysis
food   drinks

Bleeding Heart’s long–established and extremely popular French Restaurant offers superb food in historical surroundings within the centre of London.

The warm, wood-panelled Restaurant is an ideal venue for both an important business lunch (customers cross the City of London for its famed Cheeseboard) and for a romantic ‘diner a deux’ – it was voted by ‘The Times’ as the most romantic restaurant in London.

Bleeding Heart Restaurant the flagship of the group, which offers modern French food, ‘impeccable service’, an award-winning ‘encyclopaedic’ wine list and above all a uniquely welcoming ambience.

Our busy buzzy French Bistro with its striking 19th Century French wine posters and eccentric Vineyard Sculpture combines a warm ambience and cheerful yet professional service with traditional French dishes plus a great-value list of 450 wines by the bottle and more than a dozen by the glass.

It has been noted by City AM as “the best French Bistro in London”.

I was lured in one day by the promise of healthy fast-food – as opposed to so many of its Soho neighbours, which offer either healthy food (no meat, no dairy, no fun) or fast-food (of which nothing need be said) – and soon I was scurrying back to work each day to eat slap-up "big dishes" of tangy Moroccan meatballs with brown rice and crunchy slaw, or sweet-potato falafel with punchy aioli straight out of the sticker-adorned brown-card box.

That and the fact that despite its reputation for turning out quick, tasty, healthy takeaways for breakfast and lunch, Leon has a little-known evening service, where you eat off a plate, rather than out of the brown boxes.

It's nothing like the big fast-food chains, thank the lord – but if you want a posh pit-stop pre- or post-theatre/ cinema in London, Leon is just the place.

It’s Leon, and my children were happily munching through halloumi wraps and ‘super grilled chicken pot’ sides, while discussing the merits of the orange juice versus the lemon, lime and ginger refresher, and dipping flat bread into pots of hummus.

The large open area in front of the counter is still recognisably a fast food joint, with its open floor space, counter and neon food pictures, like a train station at rush hour, but upstairs was at least nicely decorated and fun, lots of people eating salads with their iPads for company.

So we ordered and carried our chosen lunch upstairs – super salad with avocados, broccoli and quinoa, bursting with peas and feta, grilled halloumi wraps with burger gherkins and sauce, pots of chicken with mint, Leon baked fries with aoli, which were more like a waffle, the chicken burger, crushed pea salad and meatball hotbox.

Anyone interested in recreating Leon’s wholesome snacks, can do so at home with the help of a recipe book, Leon – Happy Salads.

The book sees Leon authors Jane Baxter and John Vincent bringing together 100 recipes for fresh, vibrant, delicious salads that will have you feeling healthy and happy.

On the basis we were not really supposed to be having a starter, then, C and I both had a salad, he the original superfood (£4.95) and I the smoked mackerel and beetroot superfood (£6.25).

But as much as I sound like a cranky old thing, I cannot deny they were tasty.

Once you have the basics in place – a delicious bit of fish, processed in a delicious smoky fashion – pretty much the only thing that can go wrong is if it is leathery, and I have never tasted softer or silkier.

The main cause of over-eating, in my life at least, is things being delicious.

At least not if you're on the M6, where these (north- and southbound) family-owned service stations offer seasonal salads and wholesome roasts with meat from their own farm (£6.70) Not all dishes here are super-slimming, but they're nutritious, made with the organic produce sold in the shop downstairs and through its veg-box scheme.

It’s a great concept “naturally fast food, that both tastes good and does you good”, so I can see why people were hyped that LEON was coming to Brighton.

Working my way through breakfast baps, salad boxes, hot boxes, wraps, burgers and a number of side orders and drinks I’m now ready to give you my thoughts.

There was a lot of rice used to fill up the box and I felt LEON could have been a bit more generous with the chicken pieces, which were moist but small.

The flavours were very good in this last salad box and just like the hot box slaw, the salad was crunchy and fresh.

*Disclaimer: I was given vouchers to review LEON and I paid for my breakfast bap myself, but as always my opinion isn’t swayed by freebies and you are getting my honest view on the whole experience.

The counter has large photographic menus like most fast-food restaurants and glass cabinets with food which looks enticing.

I selected the Grilled Meatballs (“Grilled meatballs cooked down in a plum tomato sauce with fresh herbs and spices“), the Grilled Chorizo (“Grilled Brindisa chorizo served with fresh herbs and a wedge of lemon“) and the lovely baked fries.

The meatballs are soft and the tomato sauce has a real spicy kick to it.

The grilled chorizo oozes flavour and the Baked Fries have a super crisp edge.

On the menu, they have symbols to clearly identify any food allergy ingredients within each dish (Low saturated fat dish, low gycemic load, wheat free, gluten free, dairy free, vegetarian and vegan.

Another place where we want to grab a coffee when we were wonder around the interesting newly developed area behind King Cross Station.

Not sure, this looks like a pretty heavy pedestrianised area.

The cafe can be accessed by using a different ramps within the development, but it is a nice trip!

There is no lib on door, the cafe is mostly made of high tables which can be annoying, but outside they had lower tables.

Tibits, London W1, Restaurant review - Telegraph

I love meat almost as much as I love my mother, who fed me my first roast lamb chopped into tiny bits when I was five years old.

Chops, rumps, roasts, knuckles, brains, gizzards, liver, bits of fat… I can think of few parts of an animal, any animal, that I won’t devour.

Kate hasn’t been to my flat for dinner again, but she did agree to have lunch with me a couple of days after my out-of-character conversion from carnivore to herbivore, suggesting a veggie place in central London.

Here is the first branch of Tibits in Britain — it opened just under two years ago — but Kate tells me they’re all over Switzerland.

Kate was pleased by the lack of tofu or meat replacements, but disappointed by the lack of texture or flavours, and the fact that it was all so stodgy and oily (“It should feel like you are doing your body good, and Tibits made me sad in that respect”).

We welcome it; the company’s commitment to animal welfare, sustainability and healthy but tasty food is admirable, and the simple culinary creations work well.

The hot dishes we sampled were both satisfying and fresh: grilled halloumi combined perfectly with a sweet chilli relish, while aïoli chicken was both light and creamy.

A brown rice and fresh coleslaw accompaniment (the same for all hot dishes) was wholesome and flavourful.

Breakfast baps, organic porridge, various wraps (mexican salsa, chilli chicken), superfood salads, and fruit- and spice-filled tea-time treats like cranberry and pecan flapjacks provide sustaining and delicious snacks or meals.

A welcome addition to the Spitalfields food court.
