IPPUDO London Review - Shiromaru Special - Le Captain Foodie

Review analysis
food   ambience   staff   menu

IPPUDO Ramen is a famous ramen restaurant established in Fukuoka in 1985.

IPPUDO London offers a wide range of choices when it comes to Ramen, from the original Tonkotsu to a vegetarian broth option.

The main attraction at IPPUDO London is their famous Hakata style tonkotsu pork broth.

It is frustrating because i really enjoy IPPUDO’s Ramen and they could really become THE place to go for a perfect Tonkotsu in London.

(A reminder that Ramen is without a doubt a meal that should be enjoyed quickly in order to be truly appreciated) Pork: First of all, the amount of extra slices served with the Shiromaru Special is quite consequent, you won’t feel disappointed if you love Chashu as much as i do.

I heard a rumour that Ippudo London is opening in October and their twitter account was saying something about half price so I assumed it’s already open and I went to pay a visit.

Service 5/5 Service was swift and when I ordered Kaedama (extra noodle), it arrived in about 80 seconds.

As I mentioned in Ippudo NYC review, this means my Kaedama was served before other customers’ Ramen, making sure my soup don’t get cold while I wait.

And Kaedama was served with a bit of spring onions and some sauce, which is a nice touch as sometimes taste of the soup needs a bit of a kick after each Kaedama.

Price 5/5 £9 including VAT for Ramen is acceptable and £1.5 for Kaedama is also nice.

Their classic is the Tonkotsu Ramen (£11) with rich pork broth, thin noodles topped with pork belly slices, seasoned egg, bamboo shoots, bean sprouts and spring onions.

Their Tonkotsu ramen (£11) with spring onion and chashu pork in 20-hour pork bone broth and their spicy miso ramen (£11) with pork neck chashu, padron peppers and sesame oil in a chicken bone broth are stand-out dishes.

First of all, the original Hakata concept was simplicity and rustic feeling.

Some good came out of the fusion I suppose.

*if you don’t like camembert, you will not like this one Up next was the Okonomi modern style…(it was underwhelming and lack character in taste) As in the noodles were not fried enough at the base for it to have the okonomi texture.

*Kansai style with noodle base This was when I needed to drink.

I was not happy with the taste or the noodle texture.

It looks like ramen fans will be soon spoilt for choice as international Japanese ramen specialist ‘Ippudo’ will be open their doors on Fri 10th Oct in Central St Giles.

Ippudo is due to open next week on Fri 10th October, directly opposite Kanada Ya and well within walking distance of the three most talked about ramen competitors, Bone Daddies, Tonkotsu and Shoryu Ramen.

“Founded in Japan in 1985, Japanese ramen specialist Ippudo is to open its flagship European restaurant in London this October.

Located in Central St Giles, Ippudo will offer Londoners many of the same signature dishes that has seen it become one of the most popular ramen restaurants in Japan as well as in Sydney, Singapore, Hong Kong and Manhattan, where ramen-hungry New Yorkers regularly queue around the block for a table.”

On paper, Ippudo is a chain restaurant with 120 sites in over 13 countries which is a little off-putting.

The first one on St Giles High Street is perpetually crowded with earnest ramen devotees.

I say ‘earnest’ because, for pit-stop food pivoting around noodles in porky stock, ramen attracts geek gourmands and food pedants like a jam sandwich next to an anthill.

Real ramen, to the groupies, is only found in the Fukuoka region on the island of Kyushu, in a basement kitchen that simmers its bone broth for at least a week.

At this point, I’d like to counter that London’s best ramen is probably served at Tonkotsu, Mare Street, Hackney.

I beat the queue at Kanada-Ya, yes, but I’ll still be beating a retreat to Tonkotsu when my ramen habit next comes knocking.
