The Ship Tavern Holborn, The Best Pub Food - Sunny in London
food location staff drinks ambience desserts
Here is the story of the best pub meal Mr. Sunny and I have had in Central London.
However, it’s the experience, service and quality of food that have Mr. Sunny and I telling our friends, ‘All aboard The Ship Tavern!’
Mr. Sunny has been to The Ship Tavern numerous times for beer after work.
When my American friends inquire about where they can go for excellent pub food in London, The Ship Tavern will be at the top of my recommendation list and definitely featured on the Sunny Guide to London.
Make sure next time you are in Holborn, you go upstairs to the Oak Room for a fantastic meal at The Ship Tavern.

Granted, our friend-dates usually take place in chain pubs of the beer-and-a-burger persuasion, but that comparison aside, The Ship really is lovely.
The menu promises British culinary classics and honest home cooked food (plus quaffable ales and a huge gin selection), but I feel it's being rather humble – I'd describe it as a gastro pub, with excellent choices cooked to perfection.
I started with the mushrooms – wild mushrooms cooked in brandy, parsley and garlic on a toasted brioche, while Amy had the crab - soft shell crab fritter with crab salad and caviar.
Main courses vary from £13 - 20, so although it's not the cheapest place out there, the portions are huge and the food is all cooked to perfection.
The service was excellent, the food was even better and there's so much more on the menu that I need to try.
Ship Tavern in Holborn, London Pub Review and Details

Small pub frequented by those who know the shortcut that misses out the corner where Holborn station is.
Amazingly it's been refurbished relatively recently but the designers have eschewed the tired "battered furniture and bare boards" look and redecorated it to look... just like a proper pub!
For this alone it's worth visiting; when you add in well kept draft beers, friendly service, a relaxed atmosphere and the fact you can often find a seat in here, it becomes high up on the list if you're in this area.
They've done really well to maintain standards and the food, function hire and improving beer selection make this an absolute cracker of a pub.
Beer range is dominated by Heineken brands, but then it is a tied house.
The Ship Tavern: A Charming, Traditional British Pub in Holborn ...

The Ship Tavern is both a traditional Ale House and Dining Room and has been a part of Holborn’s history since 1549!
In addition to the upstairs dining room there is also a popular bar downstairs which in addition to serving a wide range of excellent ales also serves traditional British pub food and snacks.
Dan went for the 1549 Ship Tavern House Ale which he really enjoyed and I opted for a glass of Malbec Manos Negras from Argentina, a red with defined flavours of black fruits and hints of violets.
Dan enjoyed his 1549 Ship Tavern House Ale so much that he ordered another one, whilst I decided on a Gin and Tonic.
Our evening at The Ship Tavern was excellent, we loved the decor and atmosphere and the food was top notch food and truly showcased fine British pub food.

The food here isn’t going to be the best meal you’ve ever eaten, but it may be the best food you’ll eat in a traditional pub, in this part of London.
Sitting ourselves in one of the burnt orange and mahogany wooden booths, we started with a soft shell crab fritter with a fresh crab salad, roe & chilli oil.
It sounded good and the flavours and the mushroom were excellent, but the bread needed to be much more toasted to hold everything together.
I failed to detect much of the mint oil – a flavour which I’d want to be prominent with my lamb.
As far as pub dining goes, The Ship Tavern is a hidden little gem in the hustle and bustle of London.

However, an invitation to try The Ship Tavern brought me out of my hibernation the other evening and it proved well worth the trip.
The scallops were amongst the sweetest I have tasted and the little rabbit meatballs provided a subtle gamey accompaniment.
However, he was won over by one of the pies on the specials board – Steak & Ale.
For my main course I opted for Wild Mushroom Risotto served with a Poached Duck Egg.
After his pie, Ray couldn’t manage dessert so I went it alone with the Baileys Crème Brulee and Raspberry Sorbet.
