Alex Hely-Hutchinson of 26 Grains is rethinking the way we do porridge, creating hearty sweet and savoury riffs on this breakfast staple inspired by the Scandinavian concept of 'hygge'.

Or 'Blackberry Bay' - a porridge cooked using fresh almond milk, hand-rolled oats, homemade compote and edible flowers.

Serving porridge that is animated by spice, colour and daringly innovative flavour combinations, she has proved that imagination can transform even a humble bowl of grain.

Top quality sea salt"No matter which grains you're using, salt is the best way to bring the liquid and the grains together to make a well rounded bowl of porridge.

Spices"Instead of reaching for a sweetener, try playing with different spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, ginger."

I get so many questions about my favourite places to eat, drink, move and be healthy in London so I thought I’d put together a healthy hot spot list for you guys!

You can eat the world’s most beautiful porridge at 26 Grains for breakfast, feast on delicious noodles at Wokit in Borough Market for lunch and then soak up the great atmosphere at Mildred’s for dinner.

You then have to squeeze in a visit to Nama and Juice baby, as they’re so incredible and you can work off all the food doing yoga at Tri-Yoga or Indaba, or if you’re feeling really energetic then head over to Psycle for a serious spin!

Best Place for Lunch – Wokit and Borough Market Borough Market is a foodie’s dream, it’s full of the most beautiful stands of food from amazing fruit and veg sellers to incredible juice bars, healthy noodles and veggie burgers!

My favourite stand is Wokit, it’s the most delicious noodle bar that makes such fresh, healthy food – they even have courgetti and cauliflower rice as bases!

Indoor is intimate and candle lit, whereas the outdoor tables are in prime position in pretty Neal’s Yard.

We went Green and loved the mix of apple, spinach, cucumber, avocado, celery, ginger, mint and lemon.

A yummy mix of baked apple and maple cream with almond milk oats, hazelnuts and almonds and chai.

It was so good we need to return soon to try the other options of Banana Cacao, Nordic Pear, Plum and Bay and Hazelnut and Butter… As well as porridge, there’s also a smoothie bowl and a Bircher muesli, plus staples like avo or egg on toast.

26 Grains holds monthly porridge making evenings.

ES Lifestyle Newsletter Alex “26 Grains” Hely-Hutchinson is London’s hottest food property.

26 Grains' recipe for Barley porridge with salted caramel pears Make-up-free and wearing a perfectly crumpled cream linen romper suit, she’s as natural and wholesome-looking as the organic oats she rolls and flakes herself “to create that perfect juicy but soft texture.”

There’s a quote from Mills on the cover of the 26 Grains book calling the food “absolutely delicious”.

Alex Hely-Hutchinson's love affair with oat cuisine began in Copenhagen (Matt Writtle) Her own publisher, Square Peg, part of Penguin Random House, tried to persuade her to include a juice recipe, even though “I hardly drink juice and a lot of juice companies have gone out of business.”

A tiny restaurant in Neal's Yard specialising in porridge, not just sweet but savoury.

Inspired by Scandinavian cooking after spending a year in Copenhagen, Alex Hely-Hutchinson started 26 Grains and can still be found, her sleeves rolled up, serving up the porridge.

26 grains offers a seasonally changing menu of colourful porridges loaded full of nutrition, plus the all-important yum factor – the banana cacao is wonderfully sweet and a real morning treat.

Although 26 Grains is geared towards the breakfast market, towards lunchtime there are a couple of savoury porridges on offer – we tried the egg and kale, which comes packing a fiery sriracha punch.

And it’s also one of the most delicious porridges in the capital, which just so happens to be very good for you.
