St John Bread And Wine

St John Bread and Wine

St. JOHN has three restaurants, a bakery, a winery and a wine company. Each adheres to the distinct style and philosophy which is so integral to St. JOHN and which has been so influential.

St. JOHN

ST. JOHN BREAD and WINE opened across the street from London's Spitalfields Market in May 2003.

Initially, the idea was to find a home for our bakery operations.

However, it had outgrown the original Smithfield restaurant to include a simple food offering and possible wine shop.

As plans for the former bank developed, and as people expressed interest, it became apparent that there was a desire for a restaurant.

Therefore, the Commercial Street premises became the dining room, wine and bakery shop as it now is.

In what was a bank, the casual outlet of St John delivered a rather odd meal.

A starter of mackerel with horseradish was dazzling, with very fresh mackerel with glistening skin, very nicely cooked served just with very strong horseradish – a delightfully simple dish (16/20).

For the main course a whole sea bass was roasted, and this was well made (14/20) yet there were no vegetables at all served with it, nor even any available as a side dish: this was just eccentric.

Bread was pleasant and made on the premises, though it was a bit heavy (13/20) - this is all the stranger as I have had St John's bread at other restaurants in London, and it usually very good.

The service was very slow, with long gaps: these two very simple courses took two and a quarter hours to deliver.

Bread and Wine shares the same stripped back architectural approach to interior design as sister restaurant St John, all bear wooden tables, painted white walls and exposed pipe work.

The delicious bread, baked on the premises lives up to its headline billing as does the carefully selected list of exclusively French wines that includes the restaurant’s own label house wines and champagne.

At the new St John spin-off in London's Smithfield, chef Fergus Henderson's cooking speaks for itself.

St John Bread & Wine, which opened recently next to Spitalfields Market, isn't one for the sackcloth-and-ashes brigade.

That's what it would cost if you had three courses, and a bottle from the entirely French list, but St John Bread & Wine is more of a place for a single dish and a glass of red.

I like St John Bread & Wine.

Exceptionally well-informed staff in whites give the impression they could be chefs bringing you each dish as soon as they’ve cooked it (which may sometimes be the case).

The main difference is in menus: there are no real ‘courses’ for lunch or dinner (except a salad and soups that could pass as ‘starters’), but medium-sized dishes that you can have in any order.

Goat’s curd and grilled spring onions on a slice of superb own-baked bread was made exhilarating by dashes of fabulously fresh mint; lamb onglet with chicory and anchovy didn’t recall any old English recipe to mind, but was a wonderfully rich, perfectly balanced mix.

Generously sized puds are as big as mains, and wines are impressive.

A hit for breakfast, with a renowned bacon sandwich, Bread & Wine now also offers afternoon tea.
