Rola Wala review: Top Indian street food swaddled in a sourdough ...

They serve sourdough naan wraps, an extremely tactile food that tends to lodge itself in the memory, like the exact opposite of a trauma.

The Indian street food takeaway retains a cool food truck vibe, in that it’s tiny and there’s the reassuring whiff of diesel fumes from the nearby Bishopsgate road.

ORDER THIS... Pick your curry’s chosen vehicle – either the sourdough naan wrap, a grain bowl or a cauliflower rice bowl – and then choose your filling.

If you saw the kinds of faces and noises I make while walking down Commercial Street eating curry swaddled in naan bread, you would not want to do any business with me.

THE VERDICT... Extremely good Indian street food served in very generous portions at decent lunchtime prices.

Indian food has taken London by storm, and with the opening of Darjeeling Express and the announcement of Rola Wala’s first permanent site, things aren’t slowing down anytime soon.

Rola Wala brings their signature Indian flavours to Spitalfields this summer with a menu of healthy ‘everyday Indian’ fast food, including sourdough naan rolls and seasonal grain bowls.

Meat eaters can dig into Nagaland Lamb, Rola’s Charred Chicken and Bengali Spiced Beef, and the veggie options sound just as good with Red Dal made from beetroot and Keralan Black Chickpeas.

When it comes to spice you can choose how hot to go with their range of fresh chutneys, and if the heat gets too much you can always cool down with one of Rola Wala’s own Mango, Lime and Tumeric sodas.

Vegan menu must be request on potatoes… and utterly delicious purple corn dumplings, and fermented beetroot and seaweed mash.

That said, you probably can't afford a flight to South America to find out, so head to Andina in Shoreditch instead, where Martín Morales and team have pulled together a menu that's more than 50% vegetarian, with the potential for most of these dishes to be made vegan.

Its team proved that veggie dishes could be bright, perky and delicious – so it's no surprise that it's now doing the same for animal-free eating, with dishes like southern-fried vegan buttermilk and panko mock chicken with red cabbage, maple coleslaw, sweet potato fries and smoked chipotle dip.

Yeah, we love Lyle's and its chef James Lowe simply because they're great, but we love them even more because they create a proper vegan menu every day to sit alongside their other offerings.

As Lowe points out, "I've seen restaurants with set menus where vegetarians and vegans are charged the same but just given a salad.

ES Food Newsletter Popular Indian street food stall Rola Wala will settle down in Spitalfields this summer as it opens its first permanent London site.

The new restaurant, which will sit on Brushfield Street, will offer a small amount of seating but focus mainly on serving lunch dishes to go from an 'assemble-to-order' counter with a look that references Indian roadside diners.

Mark Wright launched the street food business three years ago following an inspiring trip across India.

“I loved the fresh style of street food in India and didn’t feel it was well represented here, so I decided to start serving my own take on fresh, vibrant, colourful Indian food,” says Mark.

Mark will continue to operate the street food business alongside the restaurant, investing in a new van so the crew can attend more markets and festivals.

Street food flavours discovered on Kolkata backstreets, Bombay beaches, and Keralan waterways led Rola Wala on a journey, to bring the incredible experience of Indian street food back to the UK.

Putting spice-fuelled flavour at the heart of every meal, everything we serve is nutritionally balanced - using only the highest quality fresh ingredients, an epic combination of spicy, savoury, sweet and sour – combining into something incredible!

Located in heart of Spitalfields we are open for lunch and dinner 7 days a week, its a pretty casual affair - no need to book or fuss over tables, perfect for a quick lunch or dinner in a cool space.
