KOI Ramen Bar Review - Brick lane Market - Le Captain Foodie

Review analysis

In quest of the tastiest Ramen of London; I went this weekend to Brick Lane street food market and tried the Tonkotsu Ramen at KOI Ramen Bar.

With a very competitive price starting at £6 a Ramen; KOI Ramen wants to dissociate their Ramen from the other, more expensive, Ramen Restaurants you would find in London.

KOI Ramen bar has currently three locations: the original one is still in Brixton station Road; Another one at Tooting Market, and a pop-up food stall every Sunday at Brick Lane market.

As you can see in the picture above, the menu at KOI Ramen is pretty simple, they offer 3 different types of Ramen at an unbeatable price of £6.50 : Tonkotsu Pork, Miso Tofu and Miso Pork You then have the possibility to order the usual Extras with your ramen : Nitamago (marinated egg), extra Chashu, tofu or noodles.

KOI Ramen’s Tonkotsu is the cheapest Ramen of London at the moment.

Friends left, and I was a bit hungry so I walked to CHiatown to this new Ramen joint which I heard from a friend.

It is situated above Shuang Shuang which is a very popular trendy Chinese hot pot restaurant on Shaftesbury Ave in China town.

Shuang Shuang use same mechanism as Sushi Train to bring different ingridients for the hot pot and there was a huge queue outside to get in.

(Shuang Shuang must be regretting not having this seat space for them) Ok so I ordered top of the list on the menu, – ‘Yamagoya Ramen’.

Using name of my home town Fukuoka and Tonkotsu to try to make some bucks in London.

Note: In June 2015, Koi Ramen moved location to become a permanent part of Pop Brixton.

The owners of this street stall in Brixton are convinced the UK is about to fall head over heels for the Japanese version of noodles in soup, so they named their stall ‘in love’.

But that’s enough carping on about names, let's talk noodles.

There are just two options on the menu – classic tonkotsu (12-hour-simmered pork bone broth) ramen, served with tender, char-grilled pork belly slices, bouncy noodles and crunchy kikurage (cloud ear) mushrooms.

The milky white tonkotsu broth was a perfect balance of creamy and savoury flavours with a hint of sweetness – just as you’d find in Japan.
