Mr Jackson has upped sticks from Rotorino on Kingsland Road, where he worked as Stevie Parle's head chef.

He now channels the mistral breeze of the Med from Provence, the Languedoc and Liguria to a buzzy ground floor dining room annexe in the Parasol Unit Gallery, nestled between City Road and Regent's Canal.

The anchovy and onion tart was artfully done, while the rustic pissaladière  (a Nicçoise pastry pizza) topped helium-light shortbread with caramelised onions, cut through with the natural salt of anchovy.

Leg of lamb à la ficelle with white beans and anchovy made a definite stir – during cooking, the entire joint is dangled over wood fire and cooked with hawkish attention.

Sharing plates from £2.50-£19; wine from £4 by the glass and £22 by the bottle.

Tucked in at the end of Commercial Street – just before it opens out onto Aldgate East station and the surrounding chaos – you’ll find Chuck Burger, plainly fronted with a black sign and solitary neon light.

However my sense of place was swiftly rerouted back to East London once I noted that said shake came in a jam-jar, as most things do when you’re that close to Shoreditch.

I was surprised, when I asked my ultra-friendly waiter for a recommendation, that the first thing that came out of his mouth was “the wings”, rather than anything beefy.

The additions, which consist of red onion, pickle, American cheese and Chuck relish (which includes Sriracha, seemingly a house favourite) in the cheeseburger, are nice but nothing out of the ordinary – think Burger King if they upped their patty game.

However, for those hoping to knock back a few beers and some meat in a comfortable setting, Chuck Burger can barely be quibbled with – they certainly get the ‘meat’ bit 100% right.

Fifty minutes.

That’s how long we had to wait for our food at this new Commercial Street burger joint.

The food, when it came, was very, very good.

My cheeseburger was just about as good as it gets, with a perfectly pink, impeccably seasoned, ever-so-slightly charred patty made from chopped chuck steak (obviously) with plenty of fat.

The nicely peppery buffalo sauce on the wings was exceptional and the fries were good, too.
