Feasting at Chicago Rib Shack, Aldgate East — Her Favourite Food

We started with grilled king prawns (butterflied and grilled with red pepper ketchup) tasted like they were well marinated and grilled to perfection, it's a refreshing change from prawns breaded and coated in thick breadcrumbs or batter and they were delightfully chewy and with a hint of garlic and chilli.

The crispy (creole strips with burnt lemon mayo) catfish was breaded but it was in a thin breadcrumb coating and the white fish inside was really soft, almost melt in the mouth, I thought catfish was going to be thick and chewy), I was pleasantly surprised.

The prawns came with a slightly spicy red pepper ketchup dip and the catfish with a lime mayo which tasted similar to a tartare sauce and matched perfectly.

We couldn't decide on which Rib dish to choose so we found an option that allowed us to sample multiple options, and when I say sample I mean devour and when I say options, it felt like the entire menu once I was done.

Belly ribs, baby back ribs, beef ribs and shredded pulled pork.

The Chicago Rib Shack found it’s first home in Knightsbridge and since then dozens of restaurants have tried to copy their style, menu, and even their recipes.

But Chicago Rib Shack know that there is more to BBQ than just pouring a little ketchup and Tabasco sauce on some meat and grilling it.

Even thought original Chicago Rib Shack in Knightsbridge has sadly closed, there are now four Chicago Rib Shack restaurants which have opened in Stratford, Leeds, Twickenham and Clapham with more to follow up and down the UK.

Chicago Rib Shack is the perfect place to tantalise your tastevlbuds with authentic American food.

Chicago Rib Shack

Original since 1982 In the early 80s Bob Payton arrived in London from Chicago in search of great Ribs.

This resulted in his launch of the Chicago Rib Shack in Knightsbridge serving the best BBQ & Ribs this side of the Atlantic.

This still continues to today taking the original recipes as seriously as we did on day one.

As your meal arrives at this US-style barbecue joint, staff tie a plastic bib around your neck (motto: ‘bone appetite’).

And with good reason: CRS’s signature dishes are piles of ribs that vary from small baby back racks to gigantic beef bones that look like they’ve been hewn from a dinosaur.

The sticky, saucy meat is packed with fatty goodness and blackened charcoally bits that taste like pork crackling.

It’s a fun, casual eatery packed with trendy post-industrial decor (lightbulbs mounted in egg whisks, drinks racks made of burnished copper piping and so on).

It’s slightly too brightly lit to be a place to a linger, and the odd non-rib-based dish can be underwhelming (there’s something a bit 1980s about a portion of deep-fried pickles that includes cauliflower and carrot).
