Bleecker St

Bleecker

It all started back in 2012, when I quit my life as a lawyer, moved to London from New York, bought an old van and converted it into a food truck.

We zoomed all over town in our truck, creating a buzz for our burgers.

I’ve always believed that burgers are about the beef and that is exactly what we wanted to showcase.

In 2014, we won the London Burger Bash with the Bleecker Black - a double cheeseburger with beef black pudding.

We spent years working our asses off in the truck and at burger pop-ups with Kerb, Streetfeast and The Southbank Centre.

The Londoner » Bleecker Burger, Victoria

The best burgers in London finally have a permanent home here, no need to trek east to a burger van in a car park any longer.

But let’s be honest, you’re here for the burgers, not the decor.

And burgers really don’t come any better than these.

You know what they say, once you go black you never go back.

Plus Victoria isn’t too bad of a spot, as long as you look up past the never ending construction…

Bleecker, beloved of burger fans everywhere and at the top of Hot Dinners' personal burger list, will finally step into a proper, permanent indoor venue in Victoria.

The move follows almost five years of nomadic life for the legendary burger truck, as they moved between Southbank, Canary Wharf, Streetfeast Dalston Yard, Kerb to name but a few, before finally finding a permanent haunt in Spitalfields in early 2015.

Diners at the new Victoria venue will be able to sink their teeth into all those classic menu items we’ve come to know and love, which include their double cheeseburger (double American cheese, double beef), and their Angry Fries which come doused in hot sauce and blue cheese sauce.

With its close proximity to Victoria, particularly in an area where your options for a quick bite can feel a bit limited to pre-packaged sandwiches , and where you're in a space bereft of fine burgers - this is a lovely pre-Christmas present - albeit one you have to save until January.

Bleecker opens their Victoria branch on 23 January at 205 Victoria St, London SW1E 5NE.

Having worked under the acclaimed southern US chef John Currence at The City Grocery, The Lockhart’s Brad McDonald went on to take leading roles at Alain Ducasse, Per Se and Noma.

In January 2014, following stints co-owning and operating three restaurants in Brooklyn, New York, he re-launched The Lockhart in London’s Marylebone, putting a refined spin on southern American cooking.

In my fridge there’s always eggs, Cheddar, yoghurt, orange juice and milk (or, at work, pork, lard, pickles, Cheddar and Anson Mills grits) My most-used cookbook is The Taste of Country Cooking by Edna Lewis.

Classic Southern recipes and it’s a beautiful read which reminds me to keep cooking simply.

Close to the Curzon Victoria, a fully fledged Bleecker Burger has taken root.

So, on a Wednesday afternoon, post Manchester by the Sea at the Curzon Victoria, we popped to Bleecker Burger — a single, tiny room with less hospitality than Wood Green Dixy Chicken.

Bleecker’s menu is tiny and seems to hold great confidence that the public adores blue cheese, as it’s on the signature ‘angry fries’, the veggie burger and the only adventurous offering, the ‘blue burger’.

I’m guessing ‘angry fries’ are named after the fact that blue cheese mixed with hot sauce makes some people openly cross, which is a brave business concept.

The veggie burger was a thinly sliced square of fried tofu in a bun with a singular lettuce leaf doused in more of the blue cheese and hot sauce.

The Handbook Reviews Brick Lane Restaurant, Hopscotch

Having worked with the likes of Chick ‘n’ Sours, Street Feast and Bleecker St Burger, Jonathan Cowley has now opened his own restaurant, Hopscotch, on Brick Lane.

202 Brick Lane, Shoreditch, E1 6SA, www.hopscotchldn.com On the Menu: There’s an eclectic mix of small plates which blends Asian, European and Middle Eastern flavours and ingredients.

You’ll find the likes of grilled hispi cabbage with miso butter, Parmesan and togarashi and a smoked goat flatbread with tamarind, bitter melon, bacon fat gravy and fermented chilli.

Make sure you order the grilled hispi cabbage, regardless of whether you like cabbage or not, you haven’t had this cabbage, cooked with miso butter, parmesan and togarashi (spices) it was wildly moreish.

Go With: It makes a good date venue, but get there early enough and commandeer the communal table with your friends.

Bleecker Street take the hunger out of Hungerford Bridge when positioning their food truck down there, and have whipped up a street food storm at Spitalfields Market since parking up permanently.

That’s all down to a stripped-back but hugely satisfying formula for the all-American burger.

Show-stopping dry-aged beef cooked pink is complemented by Bleecker’s ‘secret sauce’ that tastes every bit as peppery as McDonalds’ Big Mac mayo (but more upmarket, obvs).

Cheese is as orange as the Waterloo sunset and seeded buns are toasted to perfection, perfectly mopping up those excess patty juices without ever compromising your vice-like burger grip.

There are just a few tables and you’ll be eating in the food-stall periphery of the bustling market, so don’t expect much in the way of comfort or ambience.
