If you haven’t yet been to the Anchor, on the edge of Old Town in Wichita, and you love beer and bar food, you are missing out.

Schane Gross, the powerhouse proprietor, has created a marvelous atmosphere in which to enjoy excellent drinks and interesting food.

The Anchor is known for its amazing beer selection.

Ms. Gross is passionate about beer, and does lots of research to bring a diverse variety of brews for her customers to enjoy.

The Haystack is a hamburger topped with French fries and drenched in cheese sauce.

Polly Campbell review: Anchor OTR best at casual dishes, but ...

(Photo: The Enquirer/Liz Dufour) The Anchor opened five years ago during an exciting couple of years when there were so many new restaurants in OTR it was hard to keep up.

The other is a more ambitious seafood restaurant, with composed entrees like scallops with saffron almond cream (and at least one meat entree).

(Photo: The Enquirer/Liz Dufour) The prime seats at Anchor are outdoors during the summer, along 14th Street.

The batter on the oysters is hard and bumpy, but smooth on the cod, with a thin layer next to the fish that doesn't cook all the way through, leaving a sort of creamy layer.

I quit using half-stars a long time ago, but I'm bringing them back for the Anchor, since it's so in-between  Anchor OTR  Rating: 3 1/2 stars  Where: 1401 Race St., Over-the-Rhine When: Lunch 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday, Dinner 5-10 p.m. Friday;  5-11 p.m. Saturday  Prices: Appetizers $5-17, sandwiches and entrees $17-28, plus others at market price  Reservations: Taken, on Reserve Phone: or Share this story: http://cin.ci/2xhmoLz

Dining review: The Anchor Bar and Kitchen

CLOSE The Anchor Bar and Kitchen is now open in West Asheville serving up casual, sports-watching-friendly food.

Angeli Photo The black and bleu burger at The Anchor Bar and Kitchen is a blackened beef patty with lettuce, tomato, onion and bleu cheese.

The Anchor Bar and Kitchen has nabbed the former Buffalo Nickel location, where it's created a concept more casual than its predecessor.

Sports bar protocol dictates wings and nachos on the menu, and The Anchor offers both as appetizers.

The bottom line: Taking a casual approach, The Anchor serves simple pub food such as nachos, wings, burgers, pizza and beer.
