Founders Arms in Blackfriars, London Pub Review and Details

The Founders Arms is a modern Young's pub on the south side of the river very close to Blackfriars bridge, offering the usual Young's range of drinks and pretty decent food.

It has a large terrace with seats and tables by the river, there are no major roads nearby and there's a nice view of the dome of St. Paul's (rising above the squalid mass of buildings on the north bank, that is the Mermaid Theatre complex), so it's a quiet, relaxing spot for a little R&R.

The Blackfriars station rebuild, currently in progress, has reduced the clientele somewhat as there's no longer a direct cut-though from Waterloo, which means it's often quieter than most other pubs in these parts.

If you're looking for a handy place to meet, or need to rest your feet and feed the body (after a feeding one's mind at the Tate), you'll find the Founders Arms should fit the bill nicely.

Sandwiched between Blackfriars Bridge and The Tate Modern Gallery, the Founders Arms is hardly a work of art, but the venue’s stellar views make up for the lack of architectural character.

Many patrons choose to sit on the wide terrace directly by the water, looking out at St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Millennium Bridge, and the endless fleets of barges pushing their subtle waves toward the cement shore.

Floor-to-ceiling glass windows promise a similar view from inside, where black columns separate scattered round tables and high stools that are perpetually taken over by scads of tourists and local businessmen.

Because the bar is a member of the Young’s Breweries, patrons will find lots of YB drafts and bottles at the long bar in back, including seasonal ales, smaller-production brands like Banana Bread, and the ever-popular Double Chocolate Stout.

Founders Arms sees its second wave once the nearby financial district clocks out at six, but even when the seats are full of suits and there’s a bit of a line to get in, watching the sunset over the water from the terrace is hard to beat.

My baby of 5 months was sleeping in the pram between the tables.

The manager turned up and told me that the baby would have to leave by 9pm.

The baby was sleeping in the pram, happy as Larry, not bothering anyone and obviously content.

He wanted everyone to leave but it was his birthday and I felt bad about ending the night after 1 hour, so I left the party by myself with the baby and went back home alone.

I don't know what was worse, the ridiculous "rules" they had, the amount of money we spent at the establishment that night, or how crap she made me feel as a mother telling me this was "no environment for a baby".

The Founders Arms review: A smart Bankside pub in an idyllic location

Found right next door to the Tate Modern, the Founders Arms is a smart glass-fronted pub in one of the most idyllic locations in the city.

Inside you’ll find bright decor and an informal setting, but the real pull of this Young’s pub is the outside terrace.

The space at the front of the Founders opens up towards and provides great views of the Thames and St Paul’s, and there are few better places Bankside to enjoy a drink on a summers evening.

The food is better than your average pub grub too, with the kitchen showing a flair for presentation and flavour combinations you’d expect from a good-quality gastropub.
