Bombay Brasserie is a luxurious high end Indian restaurant which since 1982, when its doors first opened in fashionable Kensington, London SW7, has been an iconic dining destination, famed for its authentic, eclectic Bombay and Indian cuisine.

Today, Bombay Brasserie transports these flavours, textures and aromas to London to surprise and delight locals and visitors from all around the globe who are looking for a authentic dining experience in sumptuous surroundings for lunch, dinner or private dining celebrations.

Long time executive chef Prahlad Hegde has been part of Bombay Brasserie since 1991 and uses only the freshest ingredients in his dishes, grinding all his own spices and lightly toasting them to obtain maximum flavour.

Bombay Brasserie was created around the idea of bringing the cuisine of Bombay to London and their menus today reflect this ongoing exploration, featuring the freshest seafood, chicken, lamb and game, plus plenty to please vegetarian palates.

The scallops were fresh and well spiced, the soft shell crab had a light spicy batter with a succulent centre but the starter of note and exclusive to Bombay Brasserie was the Palak Patta Chaat (Crispy fried baby spinach, yoghurt, date and tamarind chutney) which brings a fusion of flavours together to explode of the palate and create a dish that is truly out of this world.

Bombay Brasserie is a fine-dining Indian restaurant located directly outside Gloucester Road station.

Part of our journey here at Bombay Brasserie led us deep into the kitchen as part of a special evening where executive chef, Prahlad Hegde was waiting to give us a masterclass in Indian cooking and preparation.

The one thing which really interested me most about Bombay Brasserie was that alongside executive chef Prahlad Hegde – its Michelin starred sister restaurant, Quilon has its head chef Sriram Aylur giving Prahlad and the kitchen guidance – it’s certainly paid off.

The dish was complemented by some rice (a little stodgy), aloo roast (roasted baby potatoes with ginger, lime and spices) and the most amazing dal makhani, full of deep, rich and nutty flavours – perfect for dipping our buttery laccha paratha into.

More than one reason why you should all stop following the latest Indian restaurant openings and revisit a classic – such as Bombay Brasserie.

When it opened in 1982 the Bombay Brasserie was the first restaurant in London to elevate Indian food beyond the high street lager and vindaloo cliché that prevailed at the time.

With its airy dining room and conservatory and more sophisticated dishes it was a world away from the flock wallpaper that was then de rigeur in many local Indian restaurants.

The wine list featured labels such as Mencia Bierzo Cuatro Pasos 2010 at £36 for a bottle you can find in the high street for £6, Trinity Hill Gimblett Gravels Syrah 2012 at £65 compared to a shop price of £18, and Louis Jadot Chassagne Montrachet 2012 at £121 compared to its current retail price of £38.

Kulfi, made in the kitchen rather than bought-in, had lots of almond flavour and reasonable texture; perhaps it was a little “stretchy” compared to the ideal but the flavour was excellent (14/20).

If you ordered a modest bottle of to share wine then a typical cost per head would be about £65, which is a fair bit of money if you compare it to some other London locations, though it is still cheaper than some Mayfair Indian restaurants.
