Teen's Poem Goes Viral After Stranger Finds It in a Bar | Time

A Brooklyn teenager’s poem somehow made its way across the Atlantic Ocean to a bar in London, where it was printed and tacked up in a bar.

When someone there took a photo of the paper and posted it on social media, it quickly made the rounds on the Internet.

The poem, “Worst Day Ever?

,” seems to have originally been posted on PoetryNation by Chanie Gorkin, who describes herself as “an 11th grader at an all girls’ high school in Brooklyn, NY.

Ronnie Joice posted a photograph of the poem on Twitter: Exactly why someone printed the poem in the bar remains to be seen, but its popularity seems to be very good news for the young poet.

The compilation features many of the great song-poem factory singers, including Gene Marshall, Teri Summers, Rod Rodgers a/k/a Rod Keith and Bobbie Boyle Titles include "Santa Came On a Nuclear Missile," "Randy the Lil' Elf," :Christmas Time Philosophy" and "Rockin' Disco Santa Claus."

In fact, Mary Clignett, the customer who penned the words to "I'm Just the Other Woman," insisted that her song-poem be re-recorded.

In the case of the best-known song-poem singer, Rodd Keith, he could do a little bit of everything, from composing to playing to vocalizing, and he was the guy who impersonated the Other Woman.

Ramsey brings a certain tenderness to the final chorus as he half-whispers the immortal words, "A blind man's penis is erect because he's blind ..." Unlike most contributors to this anthology, the writer of that lyric, John Trubee, was no naif when he sent in his song-poem.

Milstein credits Ardolino with the ultimate discovery of song-poem music as a source of fun and high weirdness, and says that through him he "became fascinated with the many mysteries of song-poems."

Billy Collins: "Bar Time"

In honor of that, I’ll be celebrating poetry every Wednesday in April with a poem by my favorite poet, Billy Collins.

As part of the Spring Reading Thing 2009 I decided to read Sailing Alone Around the Room, a 2001 anthology of Billy Collins’ poetry that also includes some new poems.

I finally started reading it yesterday and came across the poem “Bar Time” from The Apple That Astonished Paris (1988).

I enjoyed this poem because it takes another look at time, a theme I think comes up in a lot of his poetry.

The poem reminds me a lot of “I Go Back to The House for a Book” — one of my favorite poems from Picnic, Lightning — because of the way both look at time as something moving and interpretive rather than static.
