food

The combination of spinach, cheese, red onion and sweet potato was very pleasant and had a nice squishy consistency, and was well seasoned with lots of black pepper - I would have liked more obvious clumps of goats' cheese, but that's just me being fussy.

It was a very nice-tasting pie, with a pleasingly elastic pastry that seemed to come in somewhere between shortcrust and puff.

The individual components were good; the steak tender, the olives sharp, with the chorizo adding a piquancy to the whole, but the pie was sadly a little under-filled.

Pastry remained crispy through its Deliveroo journey, but it's more of a container for a filling than a good shortcrust which has lots of flavour in its own right.

The filling was the right mix of satisfying meat, with a hint of flavour from the tarragon.

Food and drink have various walk-on parts in Shakespeare, but none of them is as successful as the pie in Titus Andronicus, which contains the bodies of Chiron and Demetrius, sons of Tamora, Queen of the Goths.

in Winchester, which is a self-consciously jolly arch name for a bloody good pie shop.

A shout out, too, for a fine onion gravy and for their old-school pie liquor, a classic parsley sauce by any other name.

Order the lot – pie, mushy peas, mash and sauce – and you’ll get change from a tenner.

Calum Franklin, executive head chef of the Holborn Dining Rooms at London’s Rosewood Hotel, has mounted a one-man campaign to big up the glazed pie.

I'm not really a fan of pies but I was offered these during Clarkenwell's design week and I can't say no to free food!

I had the free-range chicken pie with mash and gravy and it was AMAZING.

The peas has an amazing texture and a dash of mint, the potatoes creamy and the gravy thick - just how I like it.
