Caversham restaurant could lose licence after employing illegal ...

Reading Borough Council's licensing sub committee has been asked to revoke Himalaya Momo House's premises licence, after the owners breached a number of conditions.

He found Sirop Chapel, the premises licence holder, had left 10 days earlier and the Indian restaurant had been operating without a designated premises supervisor for over two years, so all alcohol sales made since their departure had been illegal.

The owners also failed to produce two parts of their premises licence on request, which they are legally required to do, recall any of the licensing objectives or produce any record of adequate staff training.

The council's licensing team concludes its report by stating that "the only appropriate and proportionate step" to take is to revoke the restaurant's licence.

The council's licensing sub committee will review the licence at a meeting on Tuesday, October 24.

Himalaya Momo House had its premise licence revoked by Reading Borough Council's licensing sub committee at a hearing on Tuesday, October 24.

The committee heard when police and immigration officers showed up at the restaurant in Farnham Drive on Thursday, July 13 several men dressed in white kitchen jackets were seen "scurrying in various directions".

Mr Chapel, the premises licence holder, had left 10 days earlier and the restaurant had been operating without a designated premises supervisor for over two years, so all alcohol sales made since their departure had been illegal.

After hearing evidence from members of the Home Office, Thames Valley Police and the council's licensing team, the sub committee ultimately decided to revoke the premise licence.

Councillor Paul Woodward, chair of the sub committee, gave several reasons for the revocation, including the employment of illegal workers, selling alcohol for two years in the absence of a designated premises supervisor and failing to carry of sufficient ID checks when selling alcohol.

Meal for two, including drinks and service: £140 In naming this week’s restaurant Lands End, the operators of Sunborn London, the superyacht hotel which houses it, were almost right.

We all know you shouldn’t eat in restaurants that boast about the view, that rotate, or sit on water.

From the outside the Sunborn, moored by the ExCeL exhibition centre in east London, looks like a gargantuan torpedo; it is every high-end, high-polished white kitchen appliance you’ve ever perved over, its lights twinkling prettily off the oily waters of the Thames.

■ If you’re going to ignore the rule about restaurants with a view, then you’d best do it at Hutong up London’s Shard.

■ And while we’re on the subject of Chinese food, the Hilton on Deansgate in Manchester has launched a Chinese breakfast in its podium restaurant, including congee – a form of rice porridge – plus siu mai dumplings, char siu pork and red tea.

This spot on Arcola Street used to be home to the theatre of the same name until they had to leave in 2011.

Two years on, a not-for-profit arts promotion organisation (called Cell Project Spaces) have taken the building on, and the theatre area is open to the public again as this 50-cover restaurant.

Set back where the stage used to be, the open-plan, bright white kitchen is built into what looks like a house-shaped theatre set.

Beef carpaccio was subtly perfumed with white truffle; seared scallops are dressed with samphire and light lemon zest purée; steaks are char-grilled.
