Vapiano- Pizza, Pasta and a Party - Sunny in London

Review analysis

Vapiano has three locations in London, and two of them feature live music nights (free of charge) once a month.

We learned that guests order pasta, pizzas, antipasti and salads directly from the chefs at individual stations within the restaurant.

If you’re really looking for fun, you need to go to one of the live music nights at either their Soho or Bankside restaurants to celebrate #PastaWithSoul.

For one night only, Vapiano Soho and Vapiano Bankside will host a young, unsigned act looking for an audience to test brand new exclusive material.

Seriously, Sunny friends, I think Valpiano is the perfect place to party with a group of fun friends seeking freshly made food, a contemporary atmosphere and an easy way to pay the bill.

A recent weeknight dinner at the newly opened and vast two storey Vapiano Soho proved a pleasant pit stop during any otherwise busy week.

I liked the concept at this and salads are ordered by customers at individual stations within the restaurant and prepared to order in front of guests (a Vapiano simultaneously and in just three minutes).

The herb gardens within the restaurant are also there for flavour, not just decoration and guests are encouraged to tear off a few basil leaves to add to their meal.

I don’t think Vapiano’s menu will blow you away, but I reckon the vast majority of folks grabbing a bite here will be pleased and impressed with the offering, service and setting.

A smart spot to keep in mind for family dining, casual catch ups and solo outings – Vapiano Soho is located at 84 Wardour Street, W1F 0TQ with outlets at Great Portland Street and Southwark Street and more across Europe, the Middle East and the US.

Either way, time is short and speed is of the essence, so with this in mind I was keen to try out new venue Vapiano, an Italian restaurant in the style of an American fast food joint…but with one key difference, the food is cooked from scratch.

Within minutes our starters were done, anti-pasta meats and bruscetta.

The starters were good, for the price and speed, but don’t expect the selection of Parma hams and meat cuts you would get from a more upmarket Italian restaurant.

However, Vapiano is not pretending to be anything else: it’s basic, fresh, Italian food served quickly – perfect for the lunchtime work market.

The Italian dishes for mains were again fresh, well cooked and served within minutes.

i don't eat a lot of pasta at home, besides the occasional pizza when i'm too lazy to cook after a long week (every week), which is hardly the stuff italian restaurants are made of - so i was looking forward to getting knee deep in some fresh pasta, and well-made (no offense 'xpress pizza' in honor oak park) pizza with laura.we had a reservation for six thirty, but when we arrived just before six, realised that was totally unneccessary as vapiano is a very... casual and relaxed restaurant, where reservations areunheard of.

there, it was very confusing; wait to order while the staff chat about their days, swipe your vapiano card - a few times because the scanners don't work very well, be told the card is 'maxed out' (huh?

it's just what i needed.... we were half way through our crudo e fichi pizza - topped with proscuitto, fresh figs, honey and mozzarella, that we had to cut ourselves with the butter knives available because they... didn't cut it for us, when the host came over to recommend some onion-free pastas we might like.

we settled on the scampi e spinaci with king prawns, basil pesto, cherry tomatoes, spinach and light cream, and laura went off to order that while i tried to rearrange the table to try and fit everything on it better.the table was designed to fit four people, but in the middle of it was a giant, static box that contained all the oils you could ever want for, a really, very dim light, and - on some tables, some fresh herbs.

the mains were all about a tenner each - even the pizza, and the desserts were probably overkill, which is pretty good for fast food in london.although i probably won't head back for anything other than pizza, it definitely was the ultimate in quick dining.

The street-art style design above the different pasta, pizza and salad counters certainly caught the eye.

The open kitchens feature different sections for pasta, pizza and salad so you can order directly from the chef cooking it and specify exactly what you want and how you like it.

While my friend opted for pizza, I headed to the pasta kitchen and chatted to the friendly and speedy chef as he made my dish.

Meanwhile, my friend opted for the Verdure pizza (Roasted vegetables, mushrooms, tomato sauce, mozzarella) which she praised as one of the best pizzas she’d had in a long time.

Every dish we had was tasty, fresh and rich in flavour, while the brilliant value of drinks were an added appeal.

3) Vapiano Soho, of the Vapiano pizza and pasta Italian chain in London, brings a bit of theatrics to the whole eating experience by preparing and cooking your meal in front of you.

5) For the second act, or main course as non-theatre folk may refer to it, we watched as our pasta dishes were made at speed, with additional audience participation as we were asked to pick out our desired type of pasta from the variety of shapes and sizes on display.

The pizza and pasta dishes are generally south of a tenner, which, for a Soho restaurant, seems reasonable to me.

8) Helpful waiters were on hand to support my companion and I, and our fellow diners - from groups of tourists, to the after work brigade - to work out the rules of the stage, so I did perform an embarrassing faux pas, like someone angrily waiting to be served pasta instead of going to the counter to get it myself.

10) Overall, this is a reasonably priced and easy going restaurant in Soho, with some little twists to make it more interesting then your average Italian chain.

This Great Portland street branch - one of three now in London - was their first UK foray, following it up with venues on Bankside and in Soho.

Diners are given a swipe card, with which they use to order items direct from the chefs before paying when they leave.

The menu is filled with traditional Italian dishes, ranging from antipasti and insalata to pastas, pizzas and a range of specials created by chefs at each venue.
