Farewell to The Groucho Club's bar: Bad behaviour, legendary walk ...

Bono and Mariella Frostrup brought him to the club after they'd all appeared together at a literary bash.

Clinton was relaxed and chatty, while his security men muttered into their security mikes about his dubious-looking neighbours, and Bono bashed out "Happy Christmas, Mr President" on the club joanna.

A modern-day Hoagy Carmichael, he does requests, his fingers tickling arpeggios of E major or F minor while he leans encouragingly towards the would-be singer.

I brought Florence Welch (a friend of my daughter Sophie) to the club when she was 17; she sang "Me and Bobby McGee" while Rod played along.

Not a clue about club rules, at the best bar in the world.

The Groucho Club is a private members club formed in 1985 located on Dean Street in London’s Soho.

Its name was in reference to Groucho Marx's telegram saying he didn't want to be a member of any club that would have him.

Nominations for the award are made by Groucho Club members.

In 2012, the Groucho Club hosted a pop up in Ibiza from 16 to 28 August 2012 at Sa Talaia open to members and non-members.

The Groucho Club was invited to set up a temporary restaurant and bar in the Medieval Hay Castle in the centre of town from 23 May to 2 June 2013.

Last week the Soho House Group unveiled its latest venture, a 39-room hotel and restaurant, and announced that it would be lowering the drawbridge to the great unwashed – unlike at Soho House, Shoreditch House or Soho House New York, non-members are welcome.

The square, whitewashed Georgian building, in the heart of Soho, has a discreet metal sign at first-floor level, but nothing at all on the door or railings.

At the back is a small sitting room with a lift at either side, serving the two buildings that make up the hotel.

Of course, those of us used to dining in Soho clubs don't make a big deal about celebrities, but as I scoff my pear bakewell pudding, Tracey Emin sits down at the next table!

Here, in a posh Soho restaurant, with silver cutlery, starched tablecloth, and Tracey going on about rice pudding, a chicken, bacon and leek pie costs £11.50, the same as at most pubs in town.

Groucho Marx famously quipped that he didn’t want to be a member of any club that would have him, but we dare say even he would have changed his mind following the recent spruce up of the Groucho Club.

Since the private members’ bolthole opened in 1985 in London’s Soho quarter, it has grown rather haphazardly across three period townhouses.

Architect Michaelis Boyd’s challenge was to work with the Groucho’s creative director Alice Anthony and director of art Nicky Carter to harmonise the disparate rooms with a unified theme that provides members and guests with an intuitive flow through the building.

Where possible, original features have been restored, including an antique stained glass window and timber panelling in the main staircase and bar areas.

The first floor Soho Bar now features lacquered walls and timber floors salvaged from the BBC’s old Bush House, a vivid homage to the Groucho’s arts and media members.
