then you'll come across a fair few Nicholson's pubs: there are around 40 in total in the city.

Owned by pub company Mitchell's and Butler's, Nicholson's have committed themselves to real ale.

As you may have guessed, The Clachan is a Nicholson's pub; it boasts eight handpumps, on which you might find brews from Rooster's, Ilkley, Adnams, Portobello or St Austell, among others.

If you go into a Nicholson's pub and don't find an opulent Victorian interior, you should be disappointed.

Owing to its prime location, the clientele can be unpredictable: it can be crowded with tourists and after work drinkers - usually Friday nights - or occupied by a few regulars and shoppers.

The food's decent, with service both downstairs and in the upstairs Liberty Bar; the upstairs is almost exclusively dining now, which meant it was empty when we were in on a Friday night.

The fare is Nicholson's so expect a good range of beers on the hand pumps, well kept and well served.

You can even try the beer before you buy in their "Sip before you sup" promotion - very nice.

Oct, 2011 by Robert Gale in Pubs The Clachan is a Nicholson’s-owned Victorian pub located between Carnaby and Regent Street and just behind the famous mock-Tudor Liberty department store.

The Liberty department store, located across a little alleyway from the pub, actually owned the pub for many decades until it sold it to the Allied group in 1983.

As with most Nicholson’s pubs, you can expect an excellent selection of regular beers such as Fuller’s London Pride, Sharps Doom Bar and St Austell Tribute.

Robert Gale likes beer, pubs and beer festivals.

He also likes to take photos of beer, pubs and beer festivals.

Nice comfy pub that was practically DEAD on a Saturday afternoon.

It made for a nice place to sit, drink beer, and chat.
