Pub review: St James Tavern, Winchester | Daily Echo

But for one Winchester pub it’s all about selling traditional British grub and a decent pint of golden ale.

“Jayne does a lot to make the pub look the way it does – a cosy, warm feel,” said James Bennett, pub manager.

Mr Bennett has worked there for nearly three years and says the pub’s success is all down to the customers and the good vibe.

Mr Bennett added: “My favourite pint at the moment is the 6X.

Pie nights, which are held every Wednesday, is £10 for a pie and a pint, or a glass of wine, as is curry night on Mondays.

My friend was served an undrinkable glass of wine, when she tried to return it she was told it was her fault for not walking round to the read the wine board when she'd told the barman she couldn't see that far.

She sat back down, without the wine as she didn't want to pay the difference.

He then came over to the table, was rude and aggressive, again blaming her for not reading the list properly.

I said we would happily do so, so he took my drink off me, came back with a refund and told us to get out.

When you are paying over £5 for a glass of wine, one doesn't want it to taste like vinegar and one certainly wouldn't expect such rude behaviour, especially not from the manager!

food

The King Alfred, The Little Pub Group’s latest recruit, is a haven away from the bustle of the city yet only a 10-minute walk from the high street.

Cosy corners, freshly cooked classic pub food (as well as daily specials) and real ales served by real people, who love being here as much as you will.

The King Alfred pub is part of the very local Little Pub Group, with four other establishments in the city all offering something a "bit different" and definitely worth visiting during your stay... The Green Man So much more than just a pub...it's a little enclave of hospitality; a stylish hang-out, and a great meeting place for friends, family or an intimate tête-à-tête.

Offering proper pub grub, bar lunches, suppers and brunch at the weekend.
