SOPHIE’S, a renowned Chelsea restaurant inspired by the great steakhouses of New York that opened in 2002, will launch a second restaurant in Soho.

Bathgate and Power decided to use the experience and knowledge they had gained over the past fifteen years and open a larger restaurant in the former Moulin Cinema in Soho.

Sophie’s Soho incorporates a large all-day dining restaurant, bar and covered terrace, which spans across the front of the building.

However, the menu at Sophie’s Soho will deliver from Sophie’s Chelsea for the emphasis on vegetable and fish dishes as well as meat, including Cornish turbot with sorrel butter and scallops from the fire with garlic butter.

Enquiries and reservations for the steakhouse can be made through the website, but reservations will not be taken for the main restaurant and bar area

The New York inspired steakhouse brand, which launched on Chelsea’s Fulham Road in 2002, will open a large, multi-faceted restaurant on Great Windmill Street in the former Moulin Cinema, famous for the screening of racy 70’s movies and Carry On films.

The new site will incorporate a 125-cover all-day dining restaurant, bar and 25-cover terrace as well as a 120-cover high-end steakhouse, while next door will be a six-seat kiosk with an in-built wood-fired smoker that will serve dishes to take out.

The all-day restaurant will serve a menu from 11am until late, with dishes including centre cut fillet, béarnaise and fries; charred eel, beetroot and horseradish dressing; and a chargrilled rump steak sandwich with butter lettuce, rocket and hot mustard.

The main steakhouse will sit above the bar area and will have an open kitchen with a 2.5m cast iron grill taking centre stage.

Owners Sophie Bathgate and Rupert Power say the Soho restaurant will mark an evolution of the 15 year-old steakhouse brand.

Sophie's Steakhouse and Bar has been a Chelsea stalwart for more than 10 years, and now the renowned restaurant is opening up in Soho.

Taking over the former Moulin Cinema, the spot will be an all-day eatery that appeals to both hot-deskers and evening diners.

Along with a large, covered outdoor terrace, there will be a private dining room, casual seating, a restaurant and take-away section.

Sourcing their meat from the West Country and the founder's farm, Sophie's consistently delivers great meals to West London.

With their new Soho opening, diners can expect the same meaty goodies on the all-day menu, along with a first for the restaurant, as the Soho outpost dishes up fish and veggies.

Sophie's Soho, Soho

Sophie’s restaurant and bar, housed in the former Moulin Cinema on Great Windmill Street in Soho is an expansive restaurant, bar and covered terrace.

A big addition to the Soho scene, Sophie's Steakhouse is a space for all-day dining and drinks in the more casual bar-come-terrace with dishes such as ‘Seabass carpaccio, chilli, lime’ and ‘Ribeye, béarnaise sauce, dripping fries’ and more.

The Steakhouse restaurant, set further inside the building, is a more serious affair and featuring a bespoke made, cast iron ‘infernillo grill’ in the centre where everything from fish, vegetables, and meat all hung over the open fire to create dishes including ‘Blackened tuna, grilled pineapple’, ‘Whole prime rib slow cooked on the pit’ to share and more.

Summing it all up: It’s been 15 years since Sophie Bathgate and Rupert Power set up their Chelsea steakhouse inspired by the steakhouses of New York.

Now they’ve moved to Soho’s iconic Moulin Cinema for a huge new project, where there’ll be an onsite butchery to dry age the beef, a 2.5m tall infiernillo grill and "American-sized" martinis.

London steakhouse stalwart Sophie’s has just announced a massive new restaurant and bar venture on Great Windmill Street’s iconic Moulin Cinema.

It’s no surprise that as a steakhouse, Sophie’s is taking their beef damned seriously, importing it from their family farm in Oxfordshire then dry-aging it for a month in the new restaurant’s on-site butchery.

Another unique aspect of the new Soho venue is that the restaurant aims to devote the same amount of attention to fish and veggie options as to the meat, which means there’ll be charred eel, turbot with sorrel butter or “scallops from the fire”.

Most steakhouses have a leathery, masculine edge.

Not Sophie’s.

The space at its Soho branch is large, but the look is bright and airy.

It’s nice ordering meat in a space that doesn’t feel like it’s a boys’ club.

Shout out to that waitress, though.

The infernillo grill at Sophie's Soho Photograph by Alan Pitchforth When Sophie Bathgate set up Sophie’s Steakhouse in Chelsea with Rupert Power in 2002, it was widely hailed as an unequivocal success.

Bathgate—the daughter of Jeremy Mogford, who founded the Browns restaurant chain in 1973, before selling it in 1996 for £35million—even earned the praise of Jay Rayner.

The notoriously tough restaurant critic, who has earned the title “world’s most feared”, summed it up as “great salads, great steaks, great chips, good wine”, which must surely have been met with a hearty sigh of relief.

Set in the home of the old Moulin cinema, there will be an all-day restaurant, an enormous terrace and a six-seater kiosk with an inbuilt wood-fired smoker for takeaway gems, too.

As well as the reliably excellent steak, this time there’s equal emphasis on veggie and fish dishes, without losing the smokey fire-side aesthetic, thanks to the open kitchen and the infernillo grill.
