I loved the original Smack deli in Binney Street because it was just a convenient place to eat cheap lobster.

On the current menu, there are the lobster rolls with 5 variations of dressing, bunless lobster salads and a £5 lobster chowder.

The reason why Nova Scotia lobsters can be had for so cheap is partly a side effect of overfishing in Canada.

The portions are quite generous but it is definitely not as chunky as B&L’s lobster roll, which typically has an entire claw and tail stuffed into it.

So that’s why I really miss ordering a roll and a whole lobster (including that de-shelled option) because I liked being able to over-stuff my own roll.

The menu has 4 different lobster rolls with different influences – Californian, Happy Ending, Seven Samurai (Japanese influenced lobster roll) and Spicy Mexican (Mexican influence).

We decided to do take away and ordered the Seven Samurai and Spicy Mexican lobster rolls as well as the courgette fries.

The Seven Samurai lobster roll had Japanese mayo and Japanese cabbage, cucumber, pickled ginger, spring onions and togarashi spice, and the spicy Mexican had smoked chipotle mayo, peppers, corn, jalapeños, white cabbage.

What I was not super keen about was that I did not think the difference in taste between the Seven Samurai and Spicy Mexican was massive, yes the Spicy Mexican with the jalapeno peppers was a bit more spicy, but I would have expected to feel more “Japanese” and “Mexican” flavours hitting through the lobster.

Also I did enjoy it, but I did not think it was as good as the lobster roll in Burger and Lobster, and I would rather pay up a bit more and get something tastier.

What We Ate: The lobster rolls were made with a rich, hot brioche, buttered and toasted, they were filled to the brim with large chunks of lobsters in different flavours.

Likes: the lobster rolls were to die for, the buttery brioche was incredible, but it was the courgette fries that really did it for me, they were amazing.

Verdict: Lobster rolls like you have never tried before + the best courgette fries in town, make Smack Lobster Roll Deli a must to any respectable London foodie.
