Flat Iron Square | Savage Salads

food

Bringing wholesome, fresh and innovative salads that taste delicious and keep you fuller longer.

Offering more than just the usual basic leaf and vegetable concoction.

Savage Salads is the brainchild of Italian chef Davide and former restaurant manager Kristina from Sweden.

The idea behind Savage Salads took form after browsing around the many markets of London and seeing the lack of healthy food options.

Kristina and Davide both knew that they could offer something more interesting than leafs and vegetables for salads...

Last week I received a copy of a new cookbook to review; Savage Salads: Fierce Flavours, Filling Power-Ups by Davide Del Gatto & Kristina Gustafsson.

The Savage Salads cookbook is divided up by the seasons, reflecting the natural inclination we have to vary the type of salad we like to eat depending on the weather; in summertime you might like something crisp with crunchy raw veggies, whereas in the cooler months some nicely roasted or grilled vegetables form the base of a heartier, more grounding meal.

Though Kristina and Davide’s recipes have a nutritious slant, a number of the salads in the cookbook make a very fulsome meal.

Savage Salads: Fierce Flavours, Filling Power-Ups by Davide Del Gatto & Kristina Gustafsson is out now.

ES Food Newsletter Soho’s Berwick Street Market is, helpfully, not actually on Berwick Street these days.

Making up the third prong of this trio on Broadwick  Street is the mad burger marvel, Tongue ’n’ Cheek.

First up, a full meat hotbox (sounds rude — and you can also have it naked, apparently), ordered from a rather tetchy boy at Moroccan Box on Berwick Street who served our food as if he had been stuck behind the counter of a school dining room, sploshing contents miserably into a box.

Being a sucker for good street-food chat, we decided to finish here at his new stall, Sub Cult.

Berwick Street Market | Shopping in Soho, London

Review analysis
food

Situated on the stretch of Berwick Street between the Soho strip joints of Walker's Court and the elegant Yauatcha restaurant, this fruit and veg market is one of London's oldest.

Its roots go back to 1778, and at one point the thriving market ran the length of Berwick Street.

Berwick Street is also blessed with good shops and cafés, including several vintage boutiques (look out for Reign and a branch of Absolute Vintage), renowned fabric store the Cloth Shop, coffee house Flat White and brunch favourite Foxcroft & Ginger.

So with the street food revolution in full swing, it’s time for a quick tour of London’s top street food markets.

Along with great produce – cheese, bread, cider, fresh fish and meat, your nose will be guided by delicious smells of venison burgers, Lebanese falafel, goat stew, Indian vegetarian street food and some of the most delicious scotch eggs around!

Street food gurus KERB took over Camden’s food market a while back and totally transformed it!

A little different from some of the options, at this market it’s less about street food, and more about stopping at a cute independent eatery for a bite.

Nearest Tube: Old Street, Liverpool Street or Shoreditch High Street (overground) One of the few food markets right in the heart of Central London, this one has history too, dating back to 1778!
