A veggie food connoisseur in London: Maoz Falafel on Old Compton ...

Striding past the dawdling tourists and steadfastly ignoring the variously splayed grilled ducks hanging in the Chinatown restaurant windows, I find my way to Old Compton Street.

The cross-dresser, the lesbian couple, the rock-chick  with the strange hair colouring and stranger tattoo, the tourists gawking at the young man writhing in the window of the gay bar, the trendy office folk, the cool young twenty-somethings  the people trying not to stare at the various shady establishments and the people stealthily heading out of seedier establishments, the druggies, the alcoholics - I love the mix.

Its COOOL On Old Compton St, I also know I can find the last surviving branch of Maoz Falafel in London.

It includes a falafel sandwich, a hot paper cone filled with chips and access to the salad bar.

I stuff the top of my falafel pouch from the full-to-the-brim containers of pickles and salads , squeeze on some green chilli dressing and squirt a bit of garlic sauce and tomato ketchup onto my tray to go with the steaming hot chips.

ES Food Newsletter This review was published in September 2002 Maoz is a relative newcomer to the bustle of Old Compton Street and it echoes a thousand other wipe-clean fast food joints all over the world.

Previously this site was home to an undistinguished fish and chip shop, and it remains to be seen whether falafel will be the next great takeaway craze, but there are signs in three or four languages and everything looks keen and clean.

The salads seem fresh and the falafel are?

well, falafel.

Help yourself to accessories – all you can eat, or carry – at this fast, filling, friendly falafel specialist.

Please note, Maoz is now closed.

Falafel-filled pittas are the star at this global vegetarian fast-food chain.

White or wholemeal pockets, crammed with crunchy falafel, are handed to customers, who can then top them off with a choice of garnishes from the buffet.

And what a feast for the eyes this salad bar is: from pickles and olives to bulghur wheat salad, shredded red cabbage and a huge selection of sauces – it’s easy to overfill your pitta.
