London 100% Gluten Free Leggero Review ⋆ Forever Free From

Review analysis

La Polenteria was also 100% Gluten Free and many of the dishes were centered around polenta – the Italian cornbread.

The Leggero menu takes inspiration from the English meaning of Leggero – ‘Light’ – by offering greater diversity including several lighter dishes.

If you have eaten at La Polenteria before fear not, there are new desserts, but the gluten free Tiramisu remains.

Leggero very clearly indicates what allergens are present in each dish on their online and in-house menus, making it so easy to see which dishes are suitable.

Featuring prominently within many of the main dishes currently on the menu is the Leggero homemade sorghum pasta.

Leggero: A New Gluten Free Italian Restaurant in Soho, London

If you are coeliac and love Italian food, you will be happy to know about the new Leggero restaurant in Soho, the only Italian entirely gluten free restaurant accredited by Coeliac UK Association.

Leggero is located on Old Compton Street in Soho and provides an authentic Italian menu suitable for coeliacs and generally for people with food intolerances.

Following feedback from customers who were looking for a restaurant that was 100% gluten free, Vitali decided to change the menu and change the name to Leggero – literally “light” in Italian – to reflect the new identity.

Following changes to the kitchen and the menu, Vitali was able to get officially recognised by Coeliac UK as 100% gluten free.

I decided to skip dessert, but I treated myself to a gluten free Peroni Nastro Azzurro beer to go alongside this delicious Italian lunch.

La Polenteria (now Leggero) - all gluten free in Soho, London - The ...

La Polenteria, is not surprisingly, a restaurant based around polenta, which is a corn based meal that is a staple in northern Italy.

If you are looking for gluten free in London, polenta is naturally gluten free and La Polenteria is accredited by Coeliac UK (2015), so it is an ideal option for those on a strict gluten free diet.

Most of us have seen polenta as side dishes, such as ‘polenta fries’ or as a mashed potato replacement, but La Polentaria are using polenta in inventive ways, such as as bread or pastry replacements in both savoury and sweet items.

If polenta just doesn’t tickle your fancy, there are also non-polenta meal options such as pasta Please note:  the menu has changed since I wrote this review – you will find more up to date photos and information on the 100% gluten free London post.

After our visit, it was good to see La Polenteria had been shortlisted on the 2015 Free From Eating Out awards, as one of eight restaurants acknowledged for catering for special diets.

We were impressed that it was not only a 100% gluten free kitchen, but also that there were dairy free options on the menu as well.

The kitchen is still 100% gluten free and it has broadened its menu to include more dairy free and vegan choices, some of which we were lucky enough to sample.

I saw a gap in the market – there were no gluten free Italian restaurants and took a chance.

It’s not just about gluten free but also ‘free from’ so our menu shows what allergens are contained in every dish.

Next up was the courgette burger with mixed vegetable and home made hemp bread muffin, gluten free and vegan.

Leggero Gluten Free Italian: London Restaurant Review

We started off sharing some gluten free breads with some deep fried polenta.

The breads were so fresh and had a delicious texture, with the fried polenta being just as tasty with it’s accompanying sauce.

Another dish ordered was the pork belly served with creamy polenta, homemade gravy and grilled vegetables.

We ordered a further dish for our table – the Green Pesto Polenta Gnocchi served with fresh tomato and basil sauce, topped with vegetables – a beautiful green dish which looked so healthy as well as appetising.

Leggero is situated in the heart of Soho and serves a range of fresh and handmade Italian food, which is all gluten free!

The restaurant combines traditional Italian food with a modern touch, with options such as ravioli, tagliatelle and focaccia!

As well as being entirely gluten free, the restaurant is also fantastic for other allergens and has plenty of dairy free and vegan options too.

If you are a Coeliac or gluten intolerant, I’m sure you have been through the anxiety of going out for a meal and worrying whether your food will be 100% gluten free.

As you can see, Leggero is a fantastic gluten free restaurant in London which is perfect for anyone with Coeliac disease or just looking to enjoy a delicious meal.

Eating GLUTEN FREE @Leggero Restaurant in Soho, London ...

In the heart of London, previously reviewed as a Polentaria, London’s first GLUTEN FREE Italian Restaurant, this new incarnation Leggero  is probably more up my street with a reduction of the focus on Polenta!

Of course, they still have some polenta dishes on the menu but it isn’t exclusively JUST Polenta BUT ALL GLUTEN FREE.

The staff are really friendly in explaining the transition and the large Menu, acts as the table mat as well with a good selection of GLUTEN FREE dishes indicated by the allergens which are listed under every dish.

I went with the “Handmade Sorghum Tagliatelle with bolognese sauce (allergens egg, celery, sulphites- dairy free)” This was so tasty: a little salty (which I remembered from my last visit) but really a good savoury taste.

But as I am learning, ingredients do change and therefore you should always read the label and check for yourself whether it is GLUTEN FREE or not!

To start, the menu has a range of small plates and starters, the bread looked amazing but I opted for some spinach and ricotta balls ‘Gnudi’ having already had a little taste of the foccacia.

The spinach balls were fresh, delicious and unlike any other gluten free italian food I have tried before (in a good way!)

I decided on the handmade "Sorghum Pasta" with asparagus, avocado cream, pecorino cheese and egg.

They make all the pasta each morning, so again it tasted fresh and amazing.

You can have the dish with or without a raw egg (which cooks on the warm pasta) I had the egg and it was a tasty twist.
