The Golden Union is one of those places you go when you're hungry and you desperately need a good, hearty meal (especially if you are a fan of seafood).

Do not expect anything too pretentious, just some good food at reasonable prices (try the cod with chips).... read review... Select one or more friends to recommend this review.

But like pearls in oysters, a good chippy does appear once in a while — one where the fish is always fresh, the batter crunchy and the chips fluffy.

Here’s our pick of those pearls, all of which offer decent dining-in options as well as takeaway... The Bonnie Gull Seafood Shack in Fitzrovia has fish and chips on the menu — beer battered North Sea haddock and beef dripping chunky chips, to be exact.

Its fish is among the flakiest, well-seasoned and highly-flavoured we’ve tried, its batter is reliably crisp and chewy, and the chips are soft and fluffy.

Fat crisp chips (possibly the best on this list), pleasantly chewy batter and proper mushy peas all go in its favour, while the freshness of the fish being served is unquestionable.

There’s nothing particularly fancy about it, just the highly sought-after holy trinity of crunchy and grease-free batter, fresh and juicy fish, and crisp and fluffy chips.

Incredible fish and chips.

Their homemade tartar sauce was good as well, just the right amount of tang and a wonderful complement to it all.

As a foreigner, the price was higher than I'm used to paying for this type of food (15.5 quid for a large portion, I think 2 quid less for the small), but based on local feedback this is about right for London.

Considering how fresh the fish was, I don't mind the premium.

If you enjoy fish and chips and don't mind spending more than normal (everything costs more in London anyway), you'll probably love it here.

A gem of a chippie that’s knowingly retro in look and feel but admirably forward-thinking when it comes to the beer-battered, sustainable fish it serves.

Cast an eye over the menu and it’s evident that Golden Union can talk the talk – fish delivered daily from sustainable waters, grade-A potatoes, a combo of two frying oils changed at least four times a week, and freshly made beer batter.

The point is, it can walk the walk too.

Fish is chunky, flaky and perfectly cooked in a light, crispy, complementary casing; chips are crisp, firm and fluffy; pies and fish cakes are own-made and look it – there seems to be no weak point.

Decide to eat-in and the top-of-the-range large cod and chips will set you back £12.95.
