CORAZÓN TAQUERIA TO OPEN - London On The Inside

Review analysis
food

Last year we travelled around Mexico and fell in love with chorizo verde – that’s green chorizo made with fresh herbs rather than spices.

Since then we’ve only found it on one other menu in London, Killer Tomato but now we hear Corazón Taqueria is opening and lookie here, they too will serve chorizo verde tacos.

With tacos at the heart of the menu, Corazón will open in November serving up ten signature tacos and daily specials.

With their in-house tortilla machine pumping out the shells, you can expect other fillings to include carne asada; citrus & soy marinated steak, confit onions, roast garlic & jalapeño crema, and duck carnitas; confit of duck in root beer, pickled onion, coriander & salsa verde, alongside a selection of ceviches, tostadas and salads.

Corazón | Soho Tacos For many years we bemoaned the lack of stylish little Soho spots serving up casual Mexican comfort food, but it seemed nobody would tacos seriously.

With a little help from Corazón’s in-house tortilla machine, chef Paul Daniel will be plating up a list of ten signature tacos, which include homemade chorizo verde (a chorizo made with herbs rather than spices) with confit onions; carne asada, citrus and soy-marinated steak with jalapeno crema; and barbacoa, which consists of 12-hour slow-roasted lamb rib, neck and shoulder with a spicy Pasilla pepper rub.

And while tacos are the main event here, they do a pretty damn good job with their other dishes, which include ceviches, tostadas, and salads.

Well, here it ranges from the Huevos Benedict, a taco stuffed with ham hock hash, eggs, caramelised onions and green chilli hollandaise to the Divorced Eggs, with fried eggs, crispy corn tortillas and salsa.

Corazon's Festive Botomless Brunch | Endless Marys, Margs ...

You see, they’re launching their festive, bottomless, taco-loaded Winter Warmer Bottomless Brunch every Saturday and Sunday this November through to the end of January.

Then of course, there’s, THE BOTTOMLESS BIT As you’d expect, you can get bottomless Bloody Marys, but as you might not expect, you can also spring for a unending supply of Mexican Mimosas, made from hibiscus, orange, and bubbly.

It’s running through December and January, and given Corazón’s location bang in the heart of shopping territory, the whole thing seems like a pretty decent respite from Crimbo/January sale bargain-hunting.

NOTE: Corazón’s Winter Warmer Bottomless Brunch costs £35 per guest, for a 2 hour duration.

Restaurant review: Corazón, Soho | Foodism

Corazón taqueria is the passion project of Laura Sheffield (formerly GM of The Riding House Café and Corbin & King's Fischer's) and chef Paul Daniel (who was head chef at The Riding House Café and went on to become executive chef for the whole Village London group), and it's this passion that shines through in the chic and inviting space on Soho's Poland Street.

The menu is taco-focused, obviously, with other quintessential Mexican dishes like guacamole, tostadas and rice and beans.

It would seem amiss to not wet the whistle with a margarita or five – and that's conveniently just how many different kinds Corazón has on its menu: choose from house, pomegranate, jasmine tea, achiote, and orange and black pepper.

Tacos from £9 for two; margaritas from £8.

Built on a base of all-the-rage ‘blue’ tortilla (more the colour of grey stone-washed denim circa 1990), it was piled high with two kinds of shredded cabbage – bringing sweetness, tang and crunch – plus a deliciously piquant chipotle mayo.

Also excellent was the carne asada: another blue corn tortilla, this time smeared with smooth avocado, then loaded with slivers of pink pickled onion, shredded lettuce and succulent morsels of orange-and-soy-marinated hanger steak.

Away from the tacos, there are a few other don’t-miss, comfort food options.

They make this traditional sweetcorn-and-cheese street food snack by grilling whole cobs of corn, then stripping off the blistered, blackened kernels, adding dry spices, chilli mayo (made with aromatic guajillo chillis), a hit of lime and crumbled cow’s milk cheese.

But its benevolent approach to portion sizes, coupled with genial service, is sure to win this humble spot plenty of fans.

Joining London’s recent taqueria boom, Corazón is the brainchild of Texan native Laura Sheffield, who previously managed Corbin King’s Fischer’s and The Riding House Café.

Here, Sheffield and chef Paul Daniel (also a Riding House alumnus), present a concise menu that focuses on ten signature tacos inspired by the pair’s time spent in New York, the California coast, and Mexico itself – think house-made chorizo verde and 12-hour slow roast lamb rib, neck and shoulder with pasilla chili rub – as well as a selection of and duck carnitas, ceviche, salads and brunch on the weekends.

As with many traditional Latin American and US taquerias, a taco machine pumps out masa harina corn tortillas in view of diners, who can perch at the concrete topped terrazzo bar with a margarita.

The main restaurant – a lively space with a great playlist designed by Katy Manolescue of Article Design – draws inspiration from the faded art deco culinary enclaves of Condesa in Mexico City with a palette of avocado green and white with clay and parquetry floors, pops of red from antique benches sourced in Lewes.

and delightful attention to details such as vintage Ravenshead Tequila glassware, handmade stoneware and Talavera bowls from Puebla and vintage botanicals prints from Mexico.

Corazón, a cosy new Soho taqueria is making (Mexican) waves with its SoCal cuisine and cool diner vibes.

Inspired by Mexico City’s Condesa neighbourhood, Corazón is a new venture from Laura Sheffield, who arrived in London via her native Texas and New York City; and has spent over ten years here in top positions at well-respected pubs and restaurants, including Corbin & King eateries Fischer’s and The Riding House Café.

Chef Paul Daniel’s menu rides high on the influence of extensive travels through Mexico and along the Californian coast; whilst it focuses on ten signature tacos, there are ceviches, tostadas, and a few daily specials also thrown into the mix.

Epic fillings include 12-hour slow roast lamb rib, neck and shoulder, pasilla rub, new potatoes, mint and tomatillo salsa; and a house-made green chorizo, confit onions, coriander, salsa verde.

It’s all been nicely put together by designer Katy Manolescue of Article Design (behind such handsome projects as BAO Fitzrovia and Hoppers Soho), who looked to the faded glamour of L.A. and Mexico City’s art deco aesthetic as inspiration.
