RESTAURANT REVIEW: Cookhouse Joe, Soho - Blood Sweat And ...

Some may sit back and enjoy the success, but the creators of Dean Street Pizzeria Soho Joe have decided to not rest on their laurels and have recently launched Cookhouse Joe, a Lebanese inspired rotisserie chicken restaurant just off Oxford Street.
Those who have been to Soho Joe will know how manic it can get in the evenings with queues often going outside the entrance, however strolling up to Cookhouse Joe at 6pm; I’m pleasantly surprised to find an altogether more relaxed atmosphere with plenty of tables to choose from in the 2 storey eatery.
Cookhouse Joe is entirely family run and we are greeted by ‘Mama Joe’ who excitingly tells us all about the family’s long history of restaurant owning with such passion it’s hard not to feel engaged.
Made daily by Mama Joe herself, Cookhouse Joe’s Apple Pie is simply magnificent, made with a buttery pastry, a sprinkling of cinnamon and a healthy dollop of love, it’s not something that can be reproduced en masse and is a MUST.
London is awash with chefs attempting to create the planet’s most complex, unique menu, so it’s refreshing that Cookhouse Joe is bucking the trend by sticking to traditional recipes without compromise.

The frightening number of sub-par burger places trying to mop up the dregs from the MeatLiquor crowds, or the nationwide sandwich chain that added a pulled pork bun to its shelves (for shame) in a pitiful attempt to grab a bit of the Pitt Cue custom, are proof that for every innovator, every creative force, everyone wanting to genuinely and honestly make nice food to make other people happy, there's a group of suits with a chequebook and the moral code of a tarantula ready to leap in and laminate some menus the second they see a queue forming.
The Next Big Thing, kicked off by Chicken Shop in Kentish Town and followed swiftly by Clockjack Oven in Soho, is rotisserie chicken.
And anyway there are still ways around the problem, such as Clockjack Oven's brining method, which means they stay lovely and moist and firm for longer, or the turnover thanks to the hordes of hungry North Londoners piling through the doors at Chicken Shop, meaning nothing hangs around for long.
For £6, you are offered a half of a free-range chicken, with fries and either salad or corn or coleslaw, a price point which gives even Nando's (£10 for the same) a run for its money.
I hate Cookhouse Joe because they have one job - to serve roast chicken - and they are absolutely no good at it at all.

Cookhouse Joe have put on an impressive lunch deal - in terms of sheer quantity - that I can't remember seeing in a Central London restaurant before.
What do you get in your deal?
3: Your choice of a side; I went for coleslaw.
This is probably double the food you could get for the same price at a certain international chicken chain (starts with “N”, ends in “Oh dear, that’s not a cheap eat”).
Editor's note: this lunch deal is in fact available beyond lunch, right up until 5pm on weekdays.

food
Not some culinary curveball starter, but the thing that got us talking with the neighbouring table one evening at Chicken Shop.
The menu lacks starters, only having a selection of meze side dishes (all £3-£4), but these fulfil either role and should not be overlooked in favour of simply ordering chicken and chips; they were very much central to the success of our meal.
More food emerged as the blurred lines of the menu became an excuse for an unashamed feast; rich lamb kofte with a delicate fresh chilli dip, chicken wings with pungent aioli as the side.
Plentiful rotisserie chicken served in gleaming baking trays A quarter chicken (£4) came served in a metal baking tray, (slightly cumbersome to manoeuvre around at the table), but was succulent and flavoursome.
It probably was better than the Chicken Shop one, but despite the similarities in the main dishes at both restaurants, comparisons aren’t really the point.
