Head up the spiral staircase to where fun meets tasty: the restaurant, a lovely spacious area with an open Robata grill and sushi bar.

Therefore we didn’t include the padrón peppers or the cassava and sweet potato chips (served with yellow tomato salsa and guacamole) as part of our 10-dish maximum, and yet we devoured them, savouring every last morsel.

From a separate snack menu, we couldn’t resist trying a couple of ‘tostaditas’ (which again I omitted from our 10-dish max rule) – one veggie friendly one with heritage tomatoes, kumquat, coriander cress, and a minty huacatay aburi dressing; the other with salmon sashimi, guacamole, jalapeño and citrus soy salsa.

From the robata menu, although a little on the salty side, the tentaculos de pulpo (octopus tentacles) were cooked to nowhere-near-rubbery perfection, marinated in aji panca and aji amarillo, and served with yuzu purple potato.

Sides of yuca frita (cassava wedges with panca dip), mazorca de maíz (Peruvian corn with chilli, butter and coriander) and Miso aubergine were all tasty but completely unnecessary, given the amount of food we had already consumed.

Chotto Matte London Restaurant Review: A Stylish Nikkei Brunch in ...

Brunch is now a meal which gives you the opportunity to drink earlier than usual, eat more food than you usually would and a good enough excuse for friends to not want to cancel on you last minute for a just coffee and a croissant.

With all my Marmite decisions of loving or hating brunch, I think I’ve officially found my new favourite and it’s served at one of Soho’s hippest restaurants – Chotto Matte.

Such a stunning dish to look at visually and flavour wise it was just as impressive.

The side of sake sautéed broccoli was perfect for mopping up the leftover juices and packed a good flavour on its own.

The perfect ending to our long and slightly boozy brunch which finished with a quick coffee and pot of tea.

I love bringing Brazilian-Nikkei dishes and flavours into my Japanese Supper Club menus and have been observing with interest the emergence of Nikkei cuisine in Europe – Chotto Matte, Sushi Samba (reviewed here) and UNI in London as well as the fabulous Pakta in Barcelona, opened by Ferran Adriá.

At Peruvian restaurant Coya (reviewed here), I was surprised to see a large number of Peruvian Nikkei dishes on their menu.

Next we had the seabass ceviche - seabass sashimi, with sweet potato, Peruvian crispy corn, coriander, lemon juice and chive oil (£7.25).

We also had  Ensalada Peruana -quinoa salad with aji amarillo sauce, pomegranate, coriander and Peruvian crispy cancha corn (£3.25), which was delicious with a combination of sweet and crunchy elements, and heat from the aji.

This was like a very good pineapple crumble dish from school days, with the Peruvian twist being the intense purple colour and savour from the black corn, which is ubiquitous in Peru.
