Popolo | Shoreditch Restaurant If you’re ever wandering around looking stressed or upset in Italy, you’ll probably find a kindly old nonna patting you on the shoulder and telling you ‘tutto finisce a tarallucci e vino’, which translates as ‘everything ends with biscuits and wine’, and essentially means that everything is going to be ok.

And if you’re ever wandering around feeling stressed or upset in Shoreditch, you’d be lucky to come across someone saying the same thing, because that would mean they were probably talking about the menu at Popolo.

This new venture from chef Jonathan Lawson (formerly of Theo Randall’s eponymous restaurant) and restaurant manager Munur Shah is bringing relaxed Italian tapas-style dining to Shoreditch.

Lawson brings a spectacular mastery of pasta to a divey little restaurant blessed with considerably more personality than its hotel-based alma mater.

The main flavour here is Italian classics, flawlessly realised: roasted delica squash and ricotta stuffed into fine pasta and bathed in sage butter; pork cheek agnolotti in a buttery porcini sauce ripe with parmesan.

Others seem to have been dreamed up for the lolz: a wonderful vegetarian dish where romanesco cauliflower, that natural fractal marvel, comes bathed in nutty, peppery romesco sauce.

Romanesco and romesco together – of course!

Lawson isn’t afraid of perfect simplicity: hake, fried in the lightest batter, with marigold-yellow aïoli of palate-prickling pungency and so thick, you can cut it like butter; sauteed chicken livers tumbled on top of oily bruschetta.

All this on a Lilliputian site – just 16 seats at the counter, four at the window, the rest at tables upstairs – where the Saturday night soundtrack was gangster rap (low-level, radio edit variety: you can still bring your mum).

Dishes are, paradoxically, both plain and complex at the same time: on a snack plate of just labneh, olives and chickpeas, the seasoning was a house-made dukkah and the olives had been deep-fried.

Even a simple grilled bavette – terrific value at £12 – was that little bit special.

If you’re going to have counter chefs who focus on the cooking (perish the thought!)

What they can’t easily remedy is the lack of legroom at the counter: the unavoidable consequence of a restaurant this skinny.
