Pizza East Notting Hill | London Restaurant Bar Reviews ...

Spread over two floors in a beautifully restored Georgian building, Pizza East in Portobello is a continuation of the already successful chain and maintains the high standards of its sister venues.

Located in the heart of Portobello Market, it serves as a great respite from all the hustle and bustle while also including a deli trading in cheeses and cured meats.

Boasting in-house wood-fired ovens and an open ground floor kitchen, it creates a greater intimacy between staff and customer whilst also giving you some great interior views.

A great establishment that has furthered Pizza East's already sterling reputation, it's definitely worth a visit.

"But the pizzas... oh, mama.

Plump, airy and pleasingly chewy, thicker – in the LA way – than the Neapolitan thin crust, with the tang of sourdough and the crunch of semolina, they are my second favourite pizzas in town, after Franco Manca."

Concrete is a versatile underground space in the heart of East London’s Shoreditch.

On the lower level of the Tea Building, Concrete’s interior is simple and raw, inspired by its industrial surroundings.

Concrete is also available to hire exclusively from 6-9pm Friday to Saturday.

I had the one with veal meatballs, cream, parsley and lemon (£12).

Veal is a very rewarding experience – serious but subtle, seasoned so beautifully here they should really make their own sausages.

Well, all the cream, unfortunately… I don’t know if you’re familiar with The Joan Collins Beauty Book of 1981: she interviews all her beautiful friends about how they stay beautiful, and her Italian one says, 'Always tomatoes, never cream.’

T says he has a new respect for cheese on toast; it’s the cream on toast you have to watch out for.

Adventurous toppings include tandoori chicken with cashew nuts (£7.45) and Peking duck with plum and hoisin sauce (£7.95) The chefs are on full view at this fun family restaurant, turning out wood-fired classics as well as house specials such as salsiccia – fennel sausage, red onion and mozzarella (£7.95)

The only other gripe is that staff insist on serving rather nice wine in chunky tumblers.

Service veers from affable to slightly snooty, but you can’t fault nice touches like American-style takeaway boxes for your leftovers.
