I look around at the bare, blasted brick walls, the polished concrete floor, wooden chairs and tables, the open shelves stocked with wine, the busy, lively atmosphere and I see credibility.

Brett’s skills are pitch–perfect at showing off flavours to their tasty best without too much messing about.

Perfect with the few flakes of rock salt, and the pale ale.

Dark fruits heading towards sour black cherries before finishing with an open log fire flourish fire of dark chocolate & coffee.

Warm chocolate cake with caramel, and vanilla ice cream.

Song Que Cafe Review: Best Cheap Vietnamese Restaurant in ...

The Lowdown Restaurant Name: Sông Quê Café Cuisine: Vietnamese Average Price per Person: £8 to 20 GBP or $14 to $34 USD Location: London, England (please refer to the map below for details) Recommendations: Any of the pho dishes, Bun Bo Hue, Grilled Beef Wrapped in Betel Leaf, and Mixed Crunchy Salad with Prawn Ratings (out of 5) Taste: 4 Creativity/Authenticity: 4.5 Atmosphere: 3.5 Service: 3 Bang for Buck: 4 I’m phokin’ obsessed with pho.

A few friends of ours suggested hitting up Sông Quê Café on Kingsland Road which has won foodie awards proclaiming the restaurant as London’s finest Vietnamese cuisine and authentic pho as well as best cheap delicious eats.

The menu is comprehensive with all the usual Vietnamese suspects including spring rolls, salad rolls, banh xeo, pho, vermicelli, shaken beef, ice coffee and more.

This salad had an abundance of textures, colors and flavors with a combination of crunchy julienned vegetables, moist tender shrimp and crispy fried prawn crackers.

Pho aside, grilled beef wrapped in betel leaves aka bò nướng lá lốt, is one of my favorite Vietnamese dishes.

ES Lifestyle Newsletter Elliot’s Café in Borough Market came into my world via word of mouth and now I’m evangelical about it, too.

Elliot’s mission is to serve ‘the best of Borough that day’, whatever grabs the owners’ attention as they scoot about the stalls – dishes such as griddled mortadella, pecorino with chestnut honey, and roast beef tartare with horseradish.

Elliot’s menu transforms daily – the sky (and the land and the sea) is the limit –served in a light, airy room overlooking the market, with chipper service and minimum fuss.

Several other things about Elliot’s made this a successful jaunt: they don’t do that painful perusal of the reservation book on arrival, or issue snooty time restraints on how long one can park one’s bum there; there are no hovering waiters, no superfluous chatter, no insistence on taking one’s coat and then losing it, no origami swan napkins, no theatrical removing and replacing of knives and forks, no whacking great service charge.

Word of mouth said Elliot’s was ‘just very good food’.
