A quick scan of your favourite listings section – allinlondon, obviously – and you’ll see that the name Viva is almost as ubiquitous in the restaurant world as The Red Lion is in the pub world.
Ah, Dalston…Located at 2, Stoke Newington Road, Viva has a handy little space on right on a corner, so although there may not be a sign as such, windows wall it in and you can see what’s going on inside.
Mexican restaurants in Dalston are a welcome sight, especially when there’s as much importance placed on the drinks as on the food.
There is also music, played at a volume loud enough to remind you that while this place serves food and could reasonably be called a restaurant, it’s just as much a bar.But you don’t just come here to hang out, you come to eat.
Next up it’s taquitos.

Since throwing open its doors in 2012, Viva Dalston on Stoke Newington Road (just up the road from Dalston Junction) has gone from strength to strength.
This being London’s Stoke Newington, there is a predictable uniformity in the area’s restaurants and Viva Dalston knows its lines perfectly.
Expect bare brick walls and kitschy furnishings at this Stoke Newington Road eatery, together with East End-standard bar staff with tattoo sleeves.
This adds to some of the place’s charm – after all this is home to Mexican food, but they don’t want you to forget that this is Mexico in Dalston.
Diners are heading here for great food with even better cocktails in an atmosphere befitting its Stoke Newington locale.

The cocktail menu focuses mostly on tequila- and rum-based Mexican classic bebidas.
A Cointreau margarita was served in a tumbler instead of the traditional margarita glass.
No Mexican cocktail would be complete without a portion of tortilla chips, so we ordered ours with guacamole: roughly mashed, garlicky, with sour lemon notes – exactly what a good guacamole should be like.
Taquitos (small soft tacos) come filled with melted cheese and succulently moist and garlicky pork, or with chicken mole, or garlic mushrooms.
Dipped into the accompanying spicy jalapeño sauce, these cheesy pockets go well with the drinks.
